Why charge people for supplying their own modem

I returned my Xfinity modem and was told that it would now cost me MORe to have unlimited data. The modem I am now using is faster and gives me better coverage around my home. Why does Xfinity feel charging more for less is a good business model?

My solution was to cancel my cable subscription. I rarely used it so it was a no brainer to save myself money. I’ve been a customer for over 10 years and feel like it means nothing to Xfinity. Now Xfinity lost a cable subscriberf just for being a little bit too greedy.

I understand that the reason is bundling, but to me it’s more like bungling.

Concern moved here to the Customer Service help section for greater exposure to Comcast corporate employees (The Digital Care Team) for assistance.

@user_048e7c Hello! Thank you for reaching out to us here on our Community Forum. We do offer Unlimited Data at a reduced cost with xFi Complete, this covers the modem rental fee ($15 per month) and Unlimited Data (normally $30 a month) for the cost of $25 a month. You will always have the option to use your modem/router if you think it is a better fit for your in-home network. If you do use your own modem, the Unlimited Data would be $30 a month as that is what the regular cost is.

We appreciate your feedback regarding the pricing, and we will be happy to forward that over to our team. The only way we can provide better products and services is based on feedback like this, so we do appreciate it!

It’s unfortunate Xfinity portrays a forced cost ( using their modem) as a discount. Instead of rewarding long term customers with a real discount it just ends up frustrating them.

If losing over 100.00 in cable fees is worth the extra charge to force them to keep your modem so be it. It just made me look at other options to knock down my bill.

@user_048e7c We understand where you are coming from and we do recognize that Unlimited Data is optional, for those that need it, the monthly fee of $30 or even $25 with xFi Complete is a huge benefit as opposed to having to pay data overage charges. It is a choice that each home will make based on its usage, and we will always do our best to improve the services we provide.

While this is true, having arbitrary (and low) data caps and charging for unlimited data to begin with is borderline criminal and should be outlawed in all states.  It is the 2020s, this practice needs to end.

Setting an artificially low data cap, then charging people exorbitant fees for breaking it causes people to sigh and pay the unlimited-extortion fee rather than risking the alternatives.

They are making more money on you by tracking and selling your data when you use their modem/router.  They can see everything on the network and what devices are doing what.  The only way around this is to use a vpn or use your own modem.  Obviously using your own modem data can can still be tracked at a public ip address level, but not as easily for Xfinity at this point that they would even bother.

[Edited: "Solicitation"] Comcast is behaving in bad business practices.

Just got told it's more expensive to have my own modem than to use the one they provided.

That doesn't make any sense economically

No one at Comcast can tell me what they are doing with that modem. The support rep manager hung up on me when I kept asking what the modem is doing.

They did not say "I don't know", they just avoided any clear answer.

Hey there @user_3uflxl  our modems are world-class devices that stand with any other commercial off-the-shelf product.

  • Gateways provide a personal WiFi experience with our free, easy-to-use Xfinity app that lets you set up your home network, find your password, see what devices are connected, set parental controls and even pause WiFi during dinner or bedtime.
  • You can also monitor the network, see who is most active and set time limits for your devices from xFi.
  • XFi Advanced Security prevents you from accidentally accessing risky sites, blocks remote access to smart devices from known dangerous sources, and receive real-time monitoring and alerts when potential security risks are detected.
  • On top of all that, you have access to full free tech support 24/7, even up to full replacement if the device is defective.

@user_3uflxl  I have called them many times about this issue and got inconsistent responses (and responses that I think were technically inaccurate or misleading). It’s illogical to charge more money when a user provides its own equipment. And this isn’t about going to another provider. Comcast is getting the right to use public property to provide services to us. [Edited: "Solicitation"]

@XfinityAlfonso that's nonsense.   Every mesh router ranking I've read shows the Xfinity equipment performing very poorly when compared to other vendor's products.   It also is irrelevant as it doesn't answer the OPs question about why Xfinity charges more for using our own equipment.

user_x7mrxe, There are benefits to having the Xfinity Gateway modems. I love our modems. I have had both the XB7 and the XB8 and both are top of the line and work very well. I have a house full of teens who are gaming all the time, and I work from home. You have to look at the value of what you are getting when you rent our modem compared to purchasing your own. With ours, if you add the Xfi Complete package you will get the following for $25 a month, and at times it is included at no cost depending on the promotion:
1. Have peace of mind doing everything you love online with unlimited data.
2. Get Advanced Security on the Go, which provides safe browsing and data protection to your mobile devices when you're not at home.
3. Upgrade to your xFi Gateway after three years at no extra cost for a better, more reliable connection for your home.
4. Enjoy wall-to-wall Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home, with a Wi-Fi Boost Pod included if recommended.

With your modem, if you add unlimited data, you will pay $30 a month and will not have the benefits of Xfi Complete.
