using my own cable modem and wifi router

Recently moved and am using Xfinity modem/router until I could unpack my old equipment.  Finally got to them and tried to set up internet.  The Arris SB6183 modem combined with a Netgear R7900 seems to hook up fine, but no internet.  I went through the compatible devices list, which shows the Arris modem, but not the Netgear router.  I noticed there are no non-combo modem/routers listed.  (they show the Netgear R7800, which is a combo, for example)  So how would I get WiFi via my Arris, when there are no 'only-routers' shown?

Am I out of luck, or are there some other steps I need to do to set up?

Hi, @user_014bb4! Thank you for reaching out to our Community Forums for assistance with the modem activation. We may need to add the modem to the account and send an activation signal in order to get the internet connection going on our end. Can you please click the Direct Messaging icon at the top right of the page, click on the pen and pad icon and enter Xfinity Support in the "To" section of the chat and provide us with your first and last name so we may further assist you.

So, it took 6 of the last 9 frustrating hours, but I managed to get my old equipment working.  Then I found my plan's 100Mbps with my old equipment was actually 5, yes five, Mbps, despite being rated to handle over 3x that.  I reckoned they must have been damaged in the move.  So I switched back to the Xfinity equipment, which took another couple of frustrating hours, ending up with almost an hour call to finally get it re-established.  It works - yay.

So, actual people at Xfinity rate a 10, but the robo-auto helpers are virtually useless.

... Arris SB6183 modem ... Netgear R7900 ... I went through the compatible devices list, which shows the Arris modem, but not the Netgear router. ...

The approved devices list at https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices only lists modems, eMTAs, and all-in-one gateway devices. As you saw it does not list standalone routers.

You didn't mention the speed of your Internet plan. The SB6183 is approved for use with plans "Up to 373 Mbps", and the R7900 should handle that speed with no problem.

@BruceW My plan is 100Mbps, and hopefully the direct messaging with Xfinity will do the trick.  I had no troubles with the Arris/Netgear setup in my previous home.
