Upgraded to unlimited data, ULTRAFAST plan (900Mbps), and gateway v8 router. Speeds now HALF of my old SUPERFAST plan and v7 router
Received a cold call from high pressure Xfinity salesman. I was consistently getting good, stable 500Mbps+ download speeds using the v7 Gateway router and SUPERFAST plan, but we went over our data limit so I upgraded to unlimited data. This plan came with a v8 Gateway, which arrived within a day and I installed. My DL speeds dropped dramatically to 85-300Mpbs. I called in and upgraded to an ULTRAFAST plan thinking thew new router required it, even though the v& gateway is capable of Gigabit - 1200Mbps.
Speeds remain subpar (under 400Mbps at any time of day) and do not fulfill the contract.
Technician came out and simplified my splitter, reactivated the v& router, and speeds stabilized momentarily back to 500-530Mbps - still not on par with ULTRAFAST contact.
I think the v8 router was defective, and something is throttling my speeds on Xfinity's side.
I need to return the v8 gateway and have a new one installed by a technician on site to get me to the agreed upon 900Mbps becasue I cannot activate and deactivate the v7 and v8 alternately to test the line.

I'm not a techie guru,, but if you're still using the XB8, try this. I'm on the gig-speed plan and got the XB8 four days ago. Ethernet is giving me roughly 940-950Mbps, which is correct for ethernet. Wifi-6(ax) devices on the 5GHz band were maxing out at 500Mbps and crashing to 130-300Mbps on every speed test. A friend of mine told me the XB8 is using IPv6, so I should try a speed test that uses that protocol. I went to speedsmart.net and it shows I'm on IPv6. Wifi speeds now showing in the 800s. Admittedly, the closest speed test server is nearly 200 miles away from me, so I'm not complaining. At first I also thought the XB8 was defective until I learned several other people in my city had the exact same results I did. If this doesn't help, keep up with Comcast. Good luck!

Thanks! I will try speedsmart.net.
My only problem is that I can swap back and forth between XB8 and XB7 becasue Xifinity needs to activate and deactivate them - they are not both live. l did run a speedsmart.net test on the XB7 and results side by side with Ookla are almost the same: average 450Mbps on Ipv6 server (50 miles away) vs 400Mbps Ookla (local). Your test seems more stable and just a better interface). I don think I can get my XB8 active again but will try. I would rather do that with a tech present.
If I do manage to run sppedsmart Ipv6 on the v8 and the speed in the contract is there (900Mbps) how can I stay connected to that server if this is Xfinity hardware?
I also also ordered an Ethernet cable to run directly into my devices (Macbook pro and Ps5) to run more tests.
Great answer, thank you!

When you go to speedsmart.net, it picks what it believes is the closest server to you. There is a setting to change their server so you can find it again. As for that website keeping you on IPv6, speedsmart.net automatically shows that and it depends upon the XB8. I'm not tech-savvy enough to mess around with a lot of the settings in the XB8, although many of them are locked by Comcast. Keep in mind, Comcast will only guarantee the ethernet speed, not the Wifi speed, so having the proper ethernet cables -- Cat-6 at least -- will be good to have. Given your issue, it's probably best to get a tech out and don't be surprised if they bill you for a premises call, unless they waive it because it's an issue with a brand new gateway.
