Telephone hack attempt

Today Thursday May 19, 2022 I received a telephone call from someone claiming to be Xfinity support.  They informed me that someone was using my internet and also trying to steal my personal information.  The person had me open Chrome and open a website: anydesk.com ----- when he told me to click on the download button I told him that I would not load new software into my computer following instruction from a telephone call that I did not initiate and he said OK and hung up.  I just wanted to warn all users to be alert and watch out for such attacks.  I think I just stopped a major problem from being downloaded to my computer.

Hello @user_57d189 and thank you for bringing this to our attention. There are a lot a scams out there nowadays. This was definitely one of them. Xfinity will never contact a customer to inform them of their internet usage or ask you to download 3rd party software.

Just happened to me on May 26. I was not as astute as I should have been and got all the way to downloading ANYDESK.com.  As he probed further I asked more questions and he gave me his name (Mike Davis- HA!) and his direct  phone number to their Philadelphia HQ. The original phone call came from an 800 number that is indeed XFINITY's phone number. So they have a way of spoofing that. He finally hung up abruptly and I uninstalled ANYDESK, then ran malware bytes. Hoping for the best. Also changed my MAC password.

I just received an identical call to what you described. When I did a search about "anydesk" I seen an item stating about this software being used in scams. I asked for the callers name and said I will contact Comcast support to discuss further. That's when the caller hung up.  This incident occurred on 6/7/22 and the call did come up identifying Comcast Support using an 800 nbr.  BEWARE of this caller

Hi - Reporting same scam today (06-July-2022). "Jonathan" from Xfinity Fraud Department detected unauthorized users (Thomas J [Edited: "Personal Information"] and Russell [Edited: "Personal Information"]) on my Xfinity router. Spoofed Xfinity's toll-free number ([Edited: "Personal Information"]) which I have in my contacts, and why I answered the call).

Wanted me to download AnyDesk. I told him I wanted to look at my Router Gateway first, so logged into the Router Gateway, and look at the firewall logs. When I told him everything was green, all attempts were blocked, and there was no indication of unauthorized users, he said he would escalate it to the Fraud Headquarters and that I should receive an email that my Xfinity account will be suspended or turned off.

FYI. :)

The same thing happened to me just today, someone called from 1800 565 4329 number which is an actual xfinity number called me saying they noticed someone in Vancouver is attempting  to log in and they wanted to check if it was me.  When I said it wasn't he then asked to provide a security code sent to my phone and I did!!!! I really thought it was a verification but then I quickly noticed that it was verification for when you attempt to log in with a forgot password setting. I was trying to keep them on the phone as long as i could while I was downloading a voice recording app. I asked from what IP they connected from and "Mike" gave me an IP which I routed back to vancouver... probably another poor victim. when I asked him if he can send me a report of the log in attempt he said of course and I went on to telling him how they have hacked my PayPal and other accounts. I did this to see if the bait would set... and sure enough, while I was on the phone I received a code verification request from PayPal. When I told him what a coincidence this just happened.. he hung up. I the logged in to my comcast and they had already changed my phone number to a [Edited: "Personal Information"] number which is a google number. And i do not know why comcast allows IP numbers as an account number but I immediately called back the 800 number and sure enough, the comcast representative told me I was on the phone with a scammer. They say comcast would never call you for any info but they have called me before and the fact that they can call from an actual comcast number is beyond me. These powerful tech companies cant catch these criminals but they sure know when you don't pay your bill. I have been hacked from so many places these past 3 months and it all started with my email on comcast. The spam I receive which I keep forwarding to the spam folder with no success, to how easy they keep logging on to my email after numerous times of changing my password

I too have been a victim of the anydesk scam. Do we know how we can be sure who is really calling? I'm noticing some suspicious calls in my call history that we didn't make.
