Target Gift Card Scam *BEWARE THEY ARE GOOD*

*Edited Preface* Upon reading my experience please take the time to reply if you are engaged in the scammers net. I hope to prevent more victims and this post should serve as reference for Xfinity to take action.

Well, I just got hooked by this scam this weekend. Soon after completing the "Target Promotion" I searched Target Xfinity promotion and my stomach sank. I will tell you that I am with it on the tech front, have never fell for a scam, easily ID the fishing garbage, always check where emails are from even if they look to be from my bank, cable company etc. Given the level of detail they operate with makes me believe that it's either an internal job at Xfinity/Comcast or they have had a major data breach in which they are not aware or they have not acknowledged to their customers. Part of the hook is that Xfinity puts you on promotions that expire, raise the prices in an effort to get you to search for another promotion and/or contact them where they attempt to bundle additional services. Another problem with Xfinity that p[lays into their hands is that contacting an actual person at Xfinity requires detective like skill.

I received a voicemail offering up to a 50% off promotion for 36 months. Sounds good as it gets my internet only service from $90/mo. to $45/mo., which is reasonable as many other internet services today are in that range. Upon calling the scammers had full access to my Xfinifty account and history. They could not have logged in externally with my password and user ID as when that is done from an unknown device there is a 2 step authentication which I did not receive. They outlined the promotion which was a no 36 month term from lowering the amount to $45, hey would waive the current $90 bill due, and send me a $50 gift card. About half way through a 30 minute call they explained the "catch" in that this promotion was sponsored by Target, which through this promotion and advertising subsidizes the promotion. The details the agent had included that I was on autopay and had access to only the last 4 digits of my checking account that was used. They knew my bill had just recently increased (previously I have spoken to a live Xfinity agent when promotions expire through a reach out from Xfinity), they knew the cost of my service, the speed of my service, and that I was internet only. In finalizing the deal they explained the connection with Target and that it required paying for one year of service in advance and paying with Target gift cards which drives revenue for the sponsor. Upon accepting the offer they waived my current bill due and asked me to check the Xfinity app and confirm that the bill had been waived, which is was and now was showing $0 due. The agent explained that he was with the sales department and gave me a promotion code to reference and provided a number to billing to complete the process. The agent explained that it had to be completed within 24hrs and provided a number [Edited: "Invalid Phone Number"] to call and explained that billing was open until 8pm. I secured two gift cards totaling $540, called "billing" and all sounded like Xfinity and legit. The agent requested my promotion reference number, pulled up the details, explained the promotion, and took the gift cards as payment.

The initial VM I had received said " Hello this is Xfinity. We are contacting you about your 50% discount offer on your monthly bill which is set to expire today. Call back at this number on your caller ID to confirm your account and lock in your savings. Thank you."

After three call to Xfinity and utilizing my acquired detective work I was finally able to connect to a person to confirm the promotion was indeed not an active promotion with Xfinity. They connected me with a security department and after 20 minutes I spoke to an agent. The agent took the information and provided a reference number and said it would be escalated I would be hearing from the department. To perhaps save another time, the direct number to the security department is 888-565-4329.

I just got scammed the same way yesterday! I am out $480! I was told to purchase 2 Target Gift cards at $240 each and was connected to "Billing Dept." at which time I gave them the numbers on the back of the cards and was told my confirmation email would arrive in about 3 hours. That is when I called my credit card company and reported fraud. They took the information from me, but said that I most likely would not get my money back, and to file a report with my local Sherriff's department. I did that and was told they would open an investigation. Mot much hope there.

I'm usually very good at spotting scams and such, but like you said, they are good. The sent me an invoice while I was talking with them and was told to read it back to them, as it was required for confirmation.  today I have been receiving voice mails telling me there was a processing error with my last payment, call [Edited:"Possible Malicious Number"], to resolve the problem. The numbers have been blocked by them now, but I've also received multiple text messages telling me my payment is stuck, or there is an issue with my Target payment, to resolve the problem please call back at the number showing on your caller ID. Number is [Edited:"Possible Malicious Number"]. My next step is to call Xfinity and the FTC. We will probably not get our money returned, but I have learned a lesson to be  more vigilant from now on.

If you have gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to:     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
The FTC also has a great webpage on Scams.  Please check it out as well.
For Target Gift Cards:
Call 1 (800) 544-2943 and follow Target’s instructions.
Keep a copy of the Target gift card or your store receipt.
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

Caveat emptor

Noun

The axiom or principle in commerce that the buyer alone is responsible for assessing the quality of a purchase before buying.

While I didn't get scammed over this, a couple of years ago I did get scammed, although the amount I lost was nothing close to what some customers here lost.  I tried disputing the charge with my bank [three times, mind you] and they denied the reimbursement each time.  I should have known better after having volunteered here for so long [19 years] but I was still pulled in.

So, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.  And if you can't remember what your plan/promotion is, check it out before agreeing to anything [read your billing statements!].  And you can always come here to ask.  The OE's here will certainly help you figure things out.

This scam is the direct result of a security flaw in Xfinity payment processing system allowing scammers access to your account using just the phone number attached to it. This flaw BYPASSES the 2-level verification. It's a known flaw that Xfinity refuses to fix. [Edited: "Solicitation"]

Just got off phone with Xfinity. They deny any culpability. They deny there is a security flaw.  [Edited: "Solicitation/Personal Information"].

It is high time Xfinity should blast email to all the customers indicating this scam. I am surprised they are not doing so, as they do not want customers to know that they have Data Breach. It is so unfortunate that the scammers are still active and making good money by cheating people. My Brother got such a call recently, he talked to the scammer and asked him: "I know this is a fraud, why are you doing this?" and the guy replied that it is a easy way to make money.

Xfinity needs to protect their customers.

Thanks,

I think the important question is how do the scammers get inside the Xfinity systems and why isn’t Xfinity doing something about it.

I have  reported this to the Massachusetts state attorney general. I understand that states are much more likely to do something than the FTC.

Does anyone have a direct phone number and email address for Xfinity security?

Having gone through this myself I can attest that "...that contacting an actual person at Xfinity requires detective like skill.". Their call-in system is not only mind-numbing frustrating, but only one step short of suicidal as the AI ignores your prompts, goes in circles and eventually disconnects you. You may have better success calling the euphemistically defined "security dept." and then asking for a transfer if warranted. Sadly, X-finity is well aware of this scam and has done ABSOLUTELY nothing to warn its customers and may feel they're too big to bother.

However, since this occurred to me in Jan '25, I have had nothing but problems with getting my actual real-world bill correct and again, it is virtually impossible to get a HUMAN on the line and if by some miracle you do? God be with in trying to understand them. Then you have to tolerate numerous 'holds' while 'they check the system' (or do their nails) and come back and repeat the same thing 5 times over 20 minutes. Even after I demanded a supervisor, got one and was "guaranteed" my correct rate, the next bill was again wrong. So, rinse, repeat and plan to waste at least 1 hour per call. I have also been bounced around with 4-5 transfers per call as one dept. says they are powerless and blames the other and switches me over for them to say the same thing and then send me back from where I was! You will also get differing information from folks in the same department such as billing. I can only imagine the company has such a gargantuan profit margin they can afford to continue in business with this degree of staff ineptness.

My happy ending? I disputed the Target card amounts with my CC company and after they did their investigation, I indeed did get my money refunded. The moral is, don't be afraid to challenge the charge and push hard for a refund. Maybe if the big "auto-pay" credit card folks get involved and threaten to not work with X, they will take notice as the FTC seems either useless or disinterested as this scam has gone on for years now. In the meantime, keep your eyes and ears open but don't hold your breath.

This same exact scam just happen to me today . promotions that expire, raise the prices in an effort to get you to search for another promotion ..They had had full access to my Xfinifty account and history. To be honest i'm still a little bit freaked out , they had my home address and they had a call center , along with Xfinity text messages me while i was on the call. Luckily, the giftcard was a big red flag and i never went through with the scam.

I wasted almost a hour of my time and they have my information . I have a big problem with Xfinity out sourcing their call center to 3rd world country . And there a data leak at xfinity and they need to notify their customers .

Xfinity finally responded to the TN AG letter that got sent to them. An Xfinity rep called me for details, and admitted that their phone payment processing system has a security flaw and that they are "fixing" it. Don't hold your breath. I've not seen their response back to the TN AG. Change your passwords, make sure 2-level verification in on, and don't respond to texts or phone calls.

Here's an interesting addition to this saga.  I got the call/voicemail and new my account was up for renewal, but was still suspicious because 50% was too good to be true.  I went to the xfinity website and logged in to check current offers.  Didn't see anything like that and chatted to a 'live agent' via their text chat.  He couldn't find me any better offer to bring my price down when it goes up next month.  I told him about the call the voicemail and asked him if it was a scam and he assured me it was NOT.  I asked him if I called that number back would they be able to offer me a better discount than he could find me and he said yes.  So there are DEFINITELY people working within Xfinity that are helping to perpetuate this scam.  I didn't know about the Target side of it until after I went ahead and returned the call. As soon as they brought up Target and paying with a Target card I knew it was a scam and said no.  Disgusting behavior.  People are really sad in this world to go to these lengths to cheat people.  They must not realize that one day they have to talk to God about it all.  I would like to think that Xfinity was on top of this but perhaps it is just one of their side businesses.  Who owns this company?

Hello @user_l11dzw. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. That call was most definitely a scam and I would like to look into this further. When you say text chat was it a live agent from our Xfinity assistant chat on our website or app?

WOW! user_k093lz Thank you for sharing! THIS IS extremely important topic! AND since it is still on going 6 months later as well. AND the VM was in perfect timing to my new upgrade with a proper rep from Xfinity two days prior. SOOOO based on the timing of my changes from a Saturday to getting a VM to verify my "changes" to "hey, we are helping current customers during this hard time of inflation" blah, blah etc. I KNOW Xfinity doesn't contact BUT bc I just made changes two days prior and picked up my new equipment at my location I assumed it was legit. I am also sharing BECAUSE it seems enough scams have happened that both Target and major CREDIT card companies are onto these bots/AI/scammers bc my transaction was blocked, and the gift cards were not allowed to be used after they received the codes. THIS is the good news, and I am sorry for the people that may pay cash/checking and it takes longer to recover.  BUT I am wondering how we can even address this legally bc we are fighting the "void" with the AI and all.

I was disappointed that the three reps I spoke with today at Xfinity (including the high security personnal) we all AI!!!?????

They called us two days ago, insisted on responding with a specific phone number [Edited: "Malicious Phone Number"]- from Weymouth, MA but msg said hours are 8-5 Pacific Time. They did their promotion spiel and didn't tell us about Target affiliation until after we considered it. Had to have the gift cards by 9pm or they would SUSPEND OUR SERVICE! (We were on autopay and were up-to-date.) They had our address, credit card info (thank you, Musk) and threatened to charge our card $199 cancellation fee. I relayed that they couldn't do that - it was against the law, but they insisted it was "Comcast policy." One of them (Indian accent) was "Bill [Edited: "Personal Information"]" (NOT) and the other was "Jim [Edited: "Personal Information"] (also NOT). Comcast has often done pushy marketing, so it wasn't all that strange to begin with. Cancelled the credit card and did not fall for it. They just take the gift cards and laugh all the way to the bank... Scary that Xfinity has this security breach - really scary.

:(

I attempted to notify Xfinity on a chat line and the entire convo the person was trying to sell me a bundle deal - SOOOOOOO annoying and frustrating!

Your advice is good but apparently worthless as both the FCC/FTC and Xfinity have known about this specific scam for at least 2 years now. Xfinity feigns shock when you call their "security" dept and act like they've never heard about it. IMO, they know they have an inside leak and have done nothing about it -such as a mass warning email/text to their subscribers, so they are just as complicit as the scammers. For the life of me I cannot understand why there has not been a class action suit on this against Xfinity. Given the long duration of this scam, blaming Musk (as someone did here) is an absurd knee jerk in the extreme.

Second this. I'm convinced this is an inside job of some sort and Xfinity is playing dumb.  Xfinity should have sent a mass email to all customers warning them of this just like Amazon did last week about a scam they're fighting. A class action suit is a good idea.

@user_l143w4 You put your finger on the core issue. This apparently stems from a 3rd party data breach of a former Xfinity vendor, Xfinity was just fined $1.5 Million for it. Xfinity not taking actions to protect its affected customers from further exposure to this scam and is not warning its affected customers that their data was stolen. Link to article from last month (November 2025): https://www.techworm.net/2025/11/comcast-fined-1-5-million-after-vendor-breach-exposes-customer-data.html

I'm on the line with them now. They said $10/month, but need to prepay 4 years for $480 with target cc or gift cards. They were able to deposit $15 into my account while I was chatting with xfinity so that was the bait, but I was able to confirm not good and blocked them. I'm hoping that this doesn't cause any other issues with my account security.

I believe Xfinity owns some responsibility in this. The scammers have found a way to get into the Xfinity billing system and by making temporary changes, they are able to convince victims that this is a legitimate offer.  If victims login on the website or the Xfinity app, they are able to see changes that the scammers have promised them. Xfinity has been made aware of this flaw in their systems a long time ago and having done nothing to mitigate the flaw.

I got scammed and realized quickly enough as to get target to invalidate my cards and refund the money. Xfinity did nothing when I called them. The scammers called me again 6 weeks later.  I finally dropped Xfinity for data and use a Verizon router that leverages the cell network. The cost of Verizon is 1/3 the cost of Xfinity. Good ridens.

I agree! I am in the middle of my dispute and when I contacted Xfinity with being transferred to higher department it was all AI! I wasn't ever in contact with a human. ALSO these scammers turned off our internet that night when the payment didn't go thru bc Target knew to block these gift cards! AND they contacted me just one day after I did make changes to my account and this is how I was derailed into thinking it was real! :o(((

I agree with you! My daughter was sus and totally found this forum for me but after the first attempt and first purchase. BUT I will say my gift cards were blocked and I am happy the fraudsters didn’t get money. Still working on my credit card purchase side. Sorry to hear you have to also battle this…AND the bummer is the timing of their acts and their perfect explanation about teaming up with target to help with inflation, blah blah blah! Urrrr
