Target Gift Card Scam *BEWARE THEY ARE GOOD*

*Edited Preface* Upon reading my experience please take the time to reply if you are engaged in the scammers net. I hope to prevent more victims and this post should serve as reference for Xfinity to take action.

Well, I just got hooked by this scam this weekend. Soon after completing the "Target Promotion" I searched Target Xfinity promotion and my stomach sank. I will tell you that I am with it on the tech front, have never fell for a scam, easily ID the fishing garbage, always check where emails are from even if they look to be from my bank, cable company etc. Given the level of detail they operate with makes me believe that it's either an internal job at Xfinity/Comcast or they have had a major data breach in which they are not aware or they have not acknowledged to their customers. Part of the hook is that Xfinity puts you on promotions that expire, raise the prices in an effort to get you to search for another promotion and/or contact them where they attempt to bundle additional services. Another problem with Xfinity that p[lays into their hands is that contacting an actual person at Xfinity requires detective like skill.

I received a voicemail offering up to a 50% off promotion for 36 months. Sounds good as it gets my internet only service from $90/mo. to $45/mo., which is reasonable as many other internet services today are in that range. Upon calling the scammers had full access to my Xfinifty account and history. They could not have logged in externally with my password and user ID as when that is done from an unknown device there is a 2 step authentication which I did not receive. They outlined the promotion which was a no 36 month term from lowering the amount to $45, hey would waive the current $90 bill due, and send me a $50 gift card. About half way through a 30 minute call they explained the "catch" in that this promotion was sponsored by Target, which through this promotion and advertising subsidizes the promotion. The details the agent had included that I was on autopay and had access to only the last 4 digits of my checking account that was used. They knew my bill had just recently increased (previously I have spoken to a live Xfinity agent when promotions expire through a reach out from Xfinity), they knew the cost of my service, the speed of my service, and that I was internet only. In finalizing the deal they explained the connection with Target and that it required paying for one year of service in advance and paying with Target gift cards which drives revenue for the sponsor. Upon accepting the offer they waived my current bill due and asked me to check the Xfinity app and confirm that the bill had been waived, which is was and now was showing $0 due. The agent explained that he was with the sales department and gave me a promotion code to reference and provided a number to billing to complete the process. The agent explained that it had to be completed within 24hrs and provided a number [Edited: "Invalid Phone Number"] to call and explained that billing was open until 8pm. I secured two gift cards totaling $540, called "billing" and all sounded like Xfinity and legit. The agent requested my promotion reference number, pulled up the details, explained the promotion, and took the gift cards as payment.

The initial VM I had received said " Hello this is Xfinity. We are contacting you about your 50% discount offer on your monthly bill which is set to expire today. Call back at this number on your caller ID to confirm your account and lock in your savings. Thank you."

After three call to Xfinity and utilizing my acquired detective work I was finally able to connect to a person to confirm the promotion was indeed not an active promotion with Xfinity. They connected me with a security department and after 20 minutes I spoke to an agent. The agent took the information and provided a reference number and said it would be escalated I would be hearing from the department. To perhaps save another time, the direct number to the security department is 888-565-4329.

They tried to get me yesterday too. These guys are super advanced and Xfinity hasn’t let their customers know that their accounts information has been breached. It felt weird, but I received a test from the Xfinity assistant that had all the previous outage and payment history. This criminal ring (with Indian accents) paid my current bill in order to facilitate the scam.  Luckily my wife and I decided to call the Xfinity customer service line to verify the promotion. Xfinity sent me an email warning me to avoid tax scams yesterday. I think it was actually a couched way of warning about this scam. I believe Xfinity doesn’t want the public to know about this data breach. They need to do more to warn their customers.

@XfinityMarcus Then why hasn't Xfinity sent an email warning their clients of this on-going and well-known scam? I've received such warnings from many companies with known scams, including preemptively offering free credit monitoring for a year. This isn't a rhetorical question-- I'd love to know why you haven't warned your clients? Please, post a reply right here, in this thread.

user_ctzm7z I appreciate you using the Community Forums page to reach out and as mentioned in the post I previously replied to, emails are indeed sent out to customers. Now just as we work to grow more vigilant each year, so do bad actors. The best way from a customer perspective to aid in our efforts is reporting all instances to our Customer Security Assurance team to be properly addressed. Have you reached out to our CSA team before?

I didn't get an email or any other communication warning me about this well-known Target card scam. However, I get plenty of surveys from Xfinity..

Please don't tell me you sent out any communication about this.

Users on this forum, has anyone gotten anything about this?? Thanks ---

I simply CANNOT BELIEVE there has not been a class action lawsuit on this matter that's apparently been going on for years and Xfinity can't warn us??  [Edited: "Language"]

@XfinityBenjaminM

I previously posted on here about the Target scam/security breach. A scammer got as far as making a payment on my account to build credibility, but after he asked me to purchase Target gift cards to prepay for service, I knew it was a scam and I disconnected the call. Now my account didn't draw my autopay for March.

We went to the Philly Center City Xfinity store on Walnut to see Chris, the manager, who said he would help reconcile my account. He wasn't in. The employees, Jordan the greeter and Lee, proceeded to patronize us. It got heated. Jordan called me my husband's pet and other misogynistic slurs. LUCKILY I RECORDED EVERYTHING. (Not video) I also let them know I was recording. I'd like to share this recording with Xfinity's regional manager for Philly, as well as straighten out my account. How do I do that?? Abuse & patronizing is unacceptable. Like I said, I have a recording. Your company is out of control. I hope you can help me with this. Who cares enough to assist??

If you have gotten a call claiming to be from Comcast asking you to buy gift cards or paying upfront for six months or more in exchange for 50% off your bill the FTC is well aware of this scam.  If you get a call like this you can report it to:     https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/
The FTC also has a great webpage on Scams.  Please check it out as well.
For Target Gift Cards:
Call 1 (800) 544-2943 and follow Target’s instructions.
Keep a copy of the Target gift card or your store receipt.
Please help to stop the spread of this kind of fraud.
Thanks!

Received a call yesterday, and they are good.  They were able to look up my account via phone number and knew what the monthly payment was, scary.  It sounded legit, but I did not buy the gift cards.  They called back in the evening after I had done some research and found out it was a scam.  When I told the person on the phone that I knew it was a scam, he started yelling at me, another sign that it was not legit.

Thank you for sharing your experience.  Like you, I fell for it and neglected to Google to see if it was a scam.  They paid my monthly bill, however, I never secured the Target GC for $600.  I contacted XFinity prior to doing so...especially since under the "expected charges for next month" on my account were the same.  While chatting with Xfinity support, I did Google and confirmed what I was thinking.

Thanks again and I am sorry for your trouble.

@user_opkftw they used a fraudulent account to “pay” your bill. Contact Xfinity or they will bill you for a late fee and a declined payment fee.

I appreciate so much you posting the Target fraud because it confirmed my suspicion that I was scammed this Sat. 4/5'25 with very similar details, receiving a V. mail that a promo with Target was available, not through the Xifinity website, but they had several real details of my plan and also they sent a common Xfinity email confirming my April payment had been covered in lieu of a $35/month 3-year plan instead of my $63 monthly fee. I got excited and got sucked in, hook, line and sinker making a first year upfront payment of $420.00. I was hesitant at first but ignored my gut feeling, bought 2 gift cards art Target and called an [Edited: "Phone Number"] number with the 'confirmation' code I was given. After calling Target and the Xfinity security number you provided above, there was nothing else that can be done but I did file a report with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission). Their advice on their website is not likely to happen: 'Use a gift card copy and store receipt to report gift card scams to the gift card company and ask for your money back.' Once the card funds have been redeemed they will not be refunded by the business selling the gift card. It was my fault for not investigating the offer sooner which I've done numerous times before but I sadly neglected to do my due diligence. I had to make sure to change my current Xfinity password and filed a detailed report with the Xfinity Security Dpt. I'm considering filing a local police report but I believe it's hopeless. I do agree that Xfinity needs to be really aggressive in notifying all customers of similar scams and needs to be proactive in protecting customers, otherwise they will lose them as they alone must protect themselves. Whatever benefits Xfinity offers they will mean nothing if they come at the cost of losing data security and each customer's' hard earned money. Xfinity BE WARNED !

Thank you so much for posting here.  I recieved this message 5 minutes ago and after having spent over 10 hours on the phone or on hold with Xfinity in the last 3 months over just changing our cable channel line up I feel for ANYONE who has this happen to them.  Xfinity service and support is so awful that if you are on the phone with someone who is helpful, you can almost guarantee it is a SCAM.  10 Hours on hold or trying to fix errors and over 3 dozen satisfaction surveys sent.  Which there was another provider in my area.  Thank you again for posting your experience.

Exactly. Even the private chat support through this forum is absurdly ineffective, patronizing, inattentive and disrespectful of my time. Comcast banks on the absence of choice of providers. Xfinity store manager in Philly provided me with a contact for his regional manager upon my request. That's my next step. Though, I'm convinced nothing will come of it, as such disregard for customer service can only come from the top.

Just happened to me- same thing- a voice mail saying today is the last day to accept promotion and to call this number back. Once on the phone with them they started talking about Target sponsoring the promotion and it was for 50% off for a 2 year term, but I’d have to pay the 6 months up front. They said they would wipe out my current balance and to pay within 24 hours. I was online with my real Xfinity account and saw my balance drop to $0. I questioned why isn’t there any e-mail confirmation of this promotion, they sent 2 “invoices” and said I would need to go to Target and purchase 2 gift cards totalling the $600 for 6 months and call back with the gift card numbers. As soon as I heard gift card I knew it was a scam and ended the call.

I quickly Googled and found this post, called the Security number you posted and initiated a case with Xfinity Security. They explained that the scammers paid down my bill through the phone IVR Bill Payment Service and used their own account to pay the bill supposedly. The charges will never go through and the credit will be reversed the next day. The Xfinity Agent said to call back with my case number and they will have any returned payment fee credited back from my account.

Same thing happened to me- voice mail saying 50% off promo ended today and to call this number back. On the phone with them & they mentioned Target and they would wipe out my current balance due but I would need to pay up front 6 months’ of fees. I had my Xfinity app open and saw my balance go down to $0 and they e-mailed me 2 “invoices” from Xfinity for the 6 months’ balance divided in half. but when they said I need to go to a Target store and buy Target gift cards to pay for the 6 months up front, I ended the call.

I called the Security number from the person’s post above and found out yes, this was a scam. They were able to pay my balance off using their account through Xfinity Bill Payment over the phone- the IVR system. The charge will never go through and the Security Agent said to just call back with my case # and they will reverse any failed payment charges on my account.

UGH!!!

DATELINE April 14, 2025: The Target Gift Card scammers are still at it.

My spouse's cell number on my cell account (even though mine is the primary number) received a voicemail saying, effectively, "Your Xfinity account's 50% off discount will expire within 24-48 hours unless you contact [phone number withheld by me]."

Curious - and suspicious - I called the number (the auto-answer was very convincingly like the Xfinity recorded greeting and menu.

I noted later that three key things right off the bat were different from a typical Xfinity Customer Service Call:

1. The number was not toll-free;

2. The recording did not greet me by first name as Xfinity's calls do; and

3. The recording did not recite my street number, asking me to confirm verbally that it was correct. This happens with a typical Xfinity Customer Service Call for verification.

A rep answered and told me that "because we paid our bill on time each month" (which happens to be the case), we were one of "a select number of Xfinity customers who qualified for a Target Promotional Discount - 50% off everything, including taxes and fees, for 3 years."

Evidently, this included internet, TV, and our home phone, so the total monthly discounted price offered was $130 - a significant saving. The man I first spoke to (who identified himself, when I asked, as "Aiden Smith") was not easy to understand but I gathered this much:
• We would have our total monthly Xfinity bill - including taxes, fees, etc. - lowered to $130.00 per month for 3 years (This would cut our bill approximately in half - a huge savings).
• I was then told I would have to pay $1,040.00 upfront for the first 8 months to qualify. (I did not realize that this payment was to be in the form of Target Gift Cards; as I said, Aiden was not easy to understand. I heard the word "Target" but assumed he meant that I and others had been targeted for this promotion.)

• "We would then not be billed for the first eight months," Aiden continued, "and the remaining months would be auto-paid at $130.00 each."

This last news shocked me; It was already seeming fishy. We have received legitimate promotions from several businesses in the past that have not required this kind of prepayment. Further, it was explained that I would have to make payment to "The Financial Department," for which I was given a different (again, non-toll-free) number, but that I could only make payment after I had signed up with Aiden.

I told Aiden that I was not going to commit to anything over the phone; that if he gave me the number of "The Financial Department," I would call them to clarify things. Aiden gave me their number and arranged to call me back within the hour.

I called the number Aiden gave me (which may have been the number of the phone across the cubicle from him, for all I know). After the same faux Xfinity greeting, a man who I could understand answered. He clearly explained the [alleged] partnership with Target stores; that "it was Target who is subsidizing the promotion in order to gain exposure." I asked again if there was a deadline. He said that the deadline was 24-48 hours; that that should give me time to get the gift cards from Target and call him back.

Incredulous, I asked, "You honestly expect me to buy a Target gift card for $1,040.00?" To which the finance guy explained, "Target's gift cards come in a maximum of $500. You would have to buy two $350 cards and one $340 card." (Either this guy was their math whiz, or his operation had tables of calculations to assist with any eventuality.) He made the mistake then of putting me on hold, and I hung up.

I then called what I knew from previous experience was a real (toll-free) Xfinity number (receiving, for the first time, the genuine Xfinity verification that had been missing before). I detailed the entire "50% off of Xfinity for 3 years for 8 months' worth of Target Gift Card prepayment" offer which I had received, and his first words were "That's a scam."

He also said that it was good that I was as cautious as I was in not committing to anything. He said that Xfinity would never offer a promotion that required prepayment. Certainly, I imagine, not in Target (or any other store's) gift cards. He thanked me for letting him know, took the two phone numbers involved, and wished me a good day. (Much more polite than the Xfinity imposters.)

If you need to contact Xfinity, try the information listed in @Again's post above.

Yes, X-finity acknowledges the scam (that has gone on for YEARS) but has done nothing to protect or warn either the subscribers or the security of their system. The have been, and remain, TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE.

They use an account that has no funds available and when the Xfinity gets notified that there are insufficient funds, your account balance goes back up and you get it with an additional $30 insufficient funds charge!

Hi...so I almost fell for this scam today! It was everything you said it was. It's truly disturbing how much info they had about my Xfinity account and how they were able to make a payment on my account. Before purchasing any Target cards, I went on-line and saw your post. What I really appreciated was you giving us the number to the security department, which I called immediately, had my account secured and started an investigation. So THANK YOU for posting that number!!! You're saving so many of us from having to spend a ton of time trying to speak to someone!! Bless you!

Why do WE have to track down these posts to be informed? WHY HAS XFINITY NOT SENT A MAIL/TEXT WARNING TO ALL IT'S CUSTOMERS??! This has been going on for YEARS!!  Someone needs to start a class action suit against X for its lack of responsibility to its customers and lack of security of their information. This is just nuts.

Thank you doge sharing this.  I went through exactly the same process, however when I was rushed to buy gift card from Target I realized it was a scam. Too late. They have already paid my bill with the checking account.  I went to Xfinity.  Spent an hour there asking to refuse that payment made by the fraudster.  It has been a week.  Finally there was some action done on my account however Xfinity is charging me now for…. the returned payment.  Horrific mess, very hard to clean.   I am unable to make any payments online or set up my account for automatic payments (the agent told me they had to cancel my automatic withdrawal).

Finally got some good news today. I had disputed the Target cards ($480.00) to Visa and got a letter to today saying the funds have been credited back to my account - so don't be afraid to challenge the charge. OTOH, because of X's security lapses and [Edited: Language], and even though I have confirmed verbally and on-line 3x the auto-pay, I still get late charges for non-payment and fees other than my written contract. How can any organization this big [Edited: Language] so much and STILL not inform it's subscribers of the scam or fix thier obviuous scecurity problems??

I just called the number 1-888-565-4329 and was told by the person who answered the phone that it was not a scam. Are you sure that the number 1-888-565-4329 is actually a valid xfinity number?
