Social Security number requirement

Why do you need this? AARP, Security Agencies, Banks, state never to give this info out. Shouldn’t my license be enough? I wasted an hour setting up a new contract with a store representative when I wouldn’t supply this info

The concern is not "Community Center" help related............ Topic moved here to the proper help section, and for greater exposure to Comcast corporate employees (The Digital Care Team) for assistance.

user_ls4lx6 Thank you so much for reaching out to us here with your questions! Xfinity requests that customers provide their SSN to preserve customer security and ensure that access to the billing and account information is limited to the account holder. Because Xfintiy takes the privacy of the customers' account information seriously, it is better to ask customers to provide their SSN than risk permitting unauthorized access to their accounts..

How is requesting someone to divulge their social security number preserving their security?  It's like asking someone for the keys to their house in order to protect them from thieves.  Why should they trust a request for private information that comes from someone they have no reason to trust??

Hello @user_a6vp41, I can understand the concern with the risk of providing your social security number and with not wanting to trust someone with your information without a reason to trust. I would like to add that we take everyone's account security seriously and can help over social media with alternate options. Do you still need help with your account?

I agree - why should Xfinity expect customers to supply their social security number?  I have been told by Xfinity to type in my social security number with the "assurance" that it is encrypted and they won't see the actual numbers.  Are we just supposed to trust the unknown person on the other end of the phone call, when we have no idea what is really transmitted and/or viewed or stored when we type in our social security number?  Xfinity needs to offer alternatives to those who are not comfortable typing in their social security number (myself included).
