Slow speed, can't talk to an actual person

Hi. My speed test comes out at 9 Mbps. Seems slow. What should I expect? Haven't been able to talk to a real person. Their chat bot suggests that my modem isn't compatible, but it's not that old - it's a Arris SurfBoard SB6183. Any thoughts on whether I actually need a new modem? My router is new - Archer AX55. Thanks for any help!

Good morning @user_m67wks, and thanks for taking the time to report your speed issues to us. If you head over to https://www.xfinity.com/support/internet/customerowned and sign in, you should see if your modem is compatible or not. You can also use that link for future reference if you ever want to upgrade your modem. Have you done any troubleshooting on your modem/router?

I have not trouble shooted my modem. But it's not that old. Why would my modem not be compatible?

The Arris SB6183 SURFboard Modem is a  DOCSIS, which stands for Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications,  and has a maximum download or supported speed of up to 373 Mbps.  This is why it shows as non-compatible, as several of our speed tiers exceed this maximum for the device.

But my speed test is 10 Mbps. The Arris SB6183 will handle higher speeds than this. Which makes me think the problem is on Xfinity.

user_m67wks What is your current speed tier that you have? Also, can you try testing the speed without your router, and let us know if you see an improvement?

FWIW. The 6183 does not appear on their approved modems list anymore, which means that it will no longer receive any firmware updates. See this They are gradually phasing out DOCSIS 3.0 devices. It's grandfathered in for now, but one day it will no longer function. It's becoming a Dinosaur.
