Secure Link in Chat

I was attempting to downgrade my plan through chat tonight and was offered a plan with internet and mobile. After accepting, I was sent a secure link to enter my SSN and DOB. After I entered this info, I got disconnected from the chat. Why was I being inquired about my SSN and DOB? Is this truly secure? Do I need to call in to change my plan since changing through the website is near impossible?
