Scammed by Xfinity over "Free iPad"

I was recently talking to a rep who promised me a "free iPad" with my new service address and my total bill would only be $85/mo.

They sent me a form for my social security number and date of birth, then send me a form for my credit card. Told me I would have a 1 time payment of $116.49 which would be refunded in 14 days.

I got the iPad but it won't activate and I've talked to reps who told that it was a scam and I would need to return the device. But the device doesn't show in my account.

I don't know what happened but I'm insanely frustrated that I'm not stuck with an iPad that isn't free.

Why is "scam" edited out? This is exactly what's been reported by other members

Fell for this scam too! I was told the Ipad would be free after a $100 initial payment and it would lower my overall xfinity bill. I expressly asked for a breakdown of what all my monthly fees would be. Once I got it my normal bill did go down but they added a mobile line and fees that greatly increased my monthly charges.

Then I went to cancel, was told they cancelled, next month still get a bill. Cancel again that month. Expressly ask what penalties, fees, etc there will be for cancelling, am told none, next month I get yet another bill. Now they want me to start paying $16 a month for the ipad.

This is insane they have not been sued over this clear scam promotion.

@user_1hvlbr This has been going on for months. It wasn't until I mentioned it on here that I was finally connected to the Executive mobile team. The best they could do is just have me return the device and get a refund.

same thing happened to me. I’m still getting billed for something I don’t have.  Can’t talk to a real person on the phone had to go through the chat again.  I might as well be talking to a wall.  Xfinity scams their customers

I just signed up for xfinity Internet and while activating my modem the rep offered me the ipad and lowered bill. Sounded too good to be true. He had me verify my ssn and date of birth. After that they wanted me to remove my credit freeze to run a credit check, thats when I started checking online and came across several posts mentioning this scam. I told him to forget the ipad and just activate my internet. He then offered me 2 more promos and kept pushing. 20 minutes later I am still waiting for this clown to activate my modem. Ridiculous. I am fully convinced that both Xfinity and WOW are owned by the same company and realize they are the only cable providers in the area and think they can do whatever they want and we just have to accept it or settle for another type of internet provider which is slower and costs more. I hope they make fiber available in my area soon.

On November 29 I called him to lower my bill and they offered a free iPad and I had to pay them $40.42 and they took my Social Security number and my charge card number. I didn’t think much of it because I’ve been dealing with Xfinity for years but after researching it I’m really concerned the iPad came today. The equipment is supposed to come on Tuesday. But I’ve got a lot of questions now from what people are saying on these posts is that they’re getting charge for cell service and I don’t need that I have a cell phone who do I get in touch with to get this straightened out thank you

This happened to me. It’s a scam even though Xfinity denies it.
I sent the iPad back and I’m still being billed for what they said was cell service. I told the, I don’t have a cell phone though them.  They proceeded to tell me the iPads has a cell number attached to it.  I was livid. How am I being billed every month for something I don’t have.  I was scammed into the “ free iPad”. That came at no extra charge with my new service plan. The IPAD was sent back the very next day.  They have the iPad but they said I still had to pay the fees.
im fighting with them daily.

When I just made the last post, I really wasn’t thinking properly. I just lost my husband in buried him this past week. I think they took advantage of me because I’m not thinking properly when they asked for my Social Security number and my charge card number. It should’ve told me something and then they asked me to pay that $40.42. There’s gotta be some help out here otherwise people are gonna start dropping Xfinity left and right.

@XfinityJeniece oh you dont care at all. Comcast continues to run this scam clearly knowing what it is despite people talking about it on here. Its the most disgusting practice from a corporation Ive seen.

its no wonder everyone is cutting the cord. I cant wait to do the same after this scam. Will be dumping comcast for good after 10 years because of this garbage.

I'm currently in the live chat disputing a rental equipment charge and was pitched this deal plus a reduction in my monthly bill. The conversation is so slimy, I feel like I'm talking to the worst craigslist scammer on the planet, but somehow it's legitimate through their website. I cannot believe an actual corporation is engaged in this kind of behavior.

FOLLOWUP: The previous live chat agent got disconnected from me somehow.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I started a new chat to confirm the equipment charge was settled and, at my request, a new agent explained to me in great detail what the iPad deal was all about. Ultimately I did end up going for it, which I didn't expect out of myself. The iPad cost me $73 upfront (taxes, processing, activation and other corporate [Edited: "Language"]) The iPad will require it's own cellular line that they baked into my new monthly bill. Previously I was an internet only customer at $60/mo.  I will be saving $15/month on my bill after adding the iPad line and all the credits they tie to it. By my math it will take 5 months for my iPad to become 'free'. I have set myself a calendar appointment for 11 months from now to cancel the cellular line and renegotiate my bill.

All things told, it seems to be a legitimate thing, but the explanation varies wildly from one agent to the next.

I recieved a text message from my account of at saying I was charged $145 for a bill. I just paid the bill on Monday. My bill is $70. I check my account and didn’t see the charge in my account but I want to make sure I didn’t have the charge so I contacted xfinity. I was connected to a guy that said o yes I can see that they charged you twice. In the mean time how is your day going? A lot of small talk which I found to be abnormal. I ask home where he was located he said India. I said o nice. I guess people from India are really nice your pretty friendly. Blah blah blah. He said I’m going to fix your account. In the meantime can I interest you in a Christmas special a “Free Laptop” so I said ok what are the hidden fees? Fee fee, service fee, installation etc. he said no just taxes and shipping ($50-$70) I said okay. No, thank you. It’s the holidays I don’t need anything. He said I willl have it waived. He said just click on this link. It lead to SSN and bday or name. My brain said (scam) I said no thank you. Are you done with my account? He said yes. Don’t hang up. I got him to waive the fees etc. I said okay but I’m fine. He said ok well I hope today was. 10/10 I was thinking. So, your not sending a survey link? Okay. Xfinity has been hacked. So I google xfinity iPad scam and found this forum. I think they are not telling us that the company has been hack and some outside entities is getting people personal information, credit card information etc and they have not resolved the issue yet. What’s sad is we are talking about it because they are trying to avoid a lawsuit by removing words like scam. Hacked. I believe that’s what’s going on. So, I got a text message from xfinity from a scammer about a bill and payment that’s not on my account please explain what happened?

As posted above, I got all the scam vibes but they were put at ease with a good customer service person that had documentation to backup the offer. They haven’t been hacked. I think they’ve just completely lost control of the call-center-sweatshop training. I did receive my iPad on Tuesday. It is a real iPad. They even followed up yesterday with a phone call (from India) to activate the iPad.

My best guess is they have these promos handed down from corporate, but the presentation of them is so bad it rings all of the scammer alarm bells.

@user_ntbfcz Definitely not hacked. That's literally how their customer service works. The agents are also talking to multiple customers at a time. They use the same script regardless of what you say. Literally no matter what you type they will respond with the exact same pleasantries. They run off a script, it's not their fault it's Comcast policy.

They want your SSN and personal info because regardless of what they tell you, what they're doing for the promotion is trying to sign you up for a separate mobile plan. They run a standard credit check to sign you up for the mobile plan. I literally told my agent I didn't want a mobile plan and he said no its not that its just a free ipad, and then boom signed me up for a mobile plan anyway...

Can't wait for [Edited: "Solicitation"] for this ridiculous "promotion" they're scamming people with.

@user_3v6jxq Your Ipad comes with a new mobile plan you'll start getting a bill for in addition to any cable/internet bill you have. Your mobile bill will be more than the discount you got on your cable/internet bill. It is a scam in that sense. But if you wanted the mobile plan I guess it's a win, for me it was not. They literally said it was just the cable discount and no additional plans and fees and then BOOM gotcha! We just lied to your face to get you to sign up.
