Received Xfinity e-mail stating under my current package, I could get 1 Gb speed ....

if I replace my Modem with a compatible one.  Are they saying I can get this faster speed and at the same price I am currently paying?

Years ago I picked out a tier that l could afford and  later I got an e-mail from Xfinity stating they boosted my speed.  Then later they boosted my speed again.  I did not request any changes at all and  they started charging me more per month because of the faster speed I was getting (yeah, seems fishy doesn't it?).  So I am suspicious,  that it starts out okay,  then I will eventually get an e-mail stating "Hey, you have 1Gb speed, you are not paying enough."

Well, let me give you this info: https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/what-happened-to-comcast/63f95b43b9b10d63e68d4e7a?commentId=63ffb3c8b9b10d63e68d752d

I was also given this " you could have faster speed" if I replaced my modem. Specifically, they suggested I upgrade from an SB8600 to an SB8611 that supports GB+ speeds.

Well xfinity officially says there is no issue but just look at these forums. The rollout to GB+ and specifically, the SB8611 seems to be giving the network some trouble. Per Comcast Business, this is a known issue that has to do with modern equipment overloading the 15+-year-old equipment in the box attached to my building. Per Xfinity, its not a known issue "but we do note people reporting issues" so it IS a known issue.

So now I have an xFi which I do not want, because thats xfinity's only apparent solution. Why does the xFi work? Well I don't know, but my guess it is because the xFi pulls down 1000mps per second while the SB8611 pulls 1200mbs. and to clarify... by 'works' i mean 'drops less frequently'. I just had a 20-minute disconnect on the xFi equipment.

This, to me, is supporting the notion that it's a problem of too much draw or load on Comcast's equipment and not my modem. I would love for an engineer to explain why I am wrong (i suppose I could have two bad modems AND xfinity gave me a bad xFi gateway).

But please be warned and document everything going forward. I have spent $300.00 on a new modem and have had 7 techs out to my property, and probably made about 30+ service calls at this point. I am starting to wonder if there is a whole class of people like us that were advised to upgrade our plans and equipment notwithstanding the apparent problem with supporting such equipment and plans. I wonder how many reports xfinity has gotten over this 'non-reported issue'.
