RE: Assigning devices to Pod vs Gateway

Having the same issue.

In my office, my phone is connected to the nearby Pod, and gets excellent connection. And my laptop (same location) connects to the Gateway and gets [Edited: "Language"] signal.

Visibly there is a bug in the "choose the best wifi connection" feature and there seems to be no way forcing the assignment. Really disappointing.

Hey, @user_5nwpll ! Thanks for reaching out to us on the forums! I apologize to hear of the issues you are having with the laptop getting a bad signal. Have you attempted to forget the network and then try to reconnect to see if that improves the issue?

Yes I did.

To be clear, I have 2 different problems with the Pod and the Gateway mesh wifi:

  • We cannot force the selection (Pod or Gateway). Sometimes my devices will not connect to the "closest" but to the furthest with worst bandwidth. Workaround: I have to disable/enable wifi from my device, and hope it connects to the proper one (Pod or Gateway). It does not always work (for example, my Canon printer always connects to the Gateway, never to the Pod which is closer)

  • There is a difference of "visibility" for devices depending on whether they connect to the Gateway or the Pod. So it's not a "real mesh" - it seems we have different Wifi networks with the same name!
    • My printer always connects to the Gateway whereas my Mac Mini and my Macbook usually connects to the Pod. Hence the printer appears as offline and I cannot print. I need to take my laptop, go next to the Gateway, disable/enable the wifi, hope the laptop will connect to the Gateway, so I can see the printer and scan or print.
    • My Sonos Move speakers connect randomly to either the Pod or Gateway. Depending on what they do, and on which one my iPhone is, they will appear or not in Spotify or Sonos app.

What's the recommendation in those cases?

@user_5nwpll  Wow, that is strange and thanks for explaining. The gateway determines what band the devices are using. It's explained on this https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/benefits-same-wifi-network-password-name-xfi-gateway FAQ, but it should manage the devices and connect them to their best choice. We recommend resetting the gateway to factory settings and allow it to update. Forgetting the network on all your devices would be next, that way everything has a fresh start/connection.
