Possible scammer impersonating Xfinity Assistant

I was using Xfinity Assistant to ask some questions.  At the end, they offered me a free mobile line for one year.  They soon sent me to a website that demanded my SSN.  They said it was to verify it was me, and Xfinity would never see it.  That makes no sense.  Making sure it's me is what the 6-digit code texts are for.

While I was searching Xfinity's web pages to report the issue, I got a Live Chat popup.  They again asked for my phone's IMEI number, and said the SSN request was not a scam.  This time I refused to give the IMEI number, and quit the chat.

Is this for real???  Why the he** would I need to give my SSN???  Have I exposed myself to hackers somehow by giving the first one my IMEI???

user_hhy9k1 Hello and thank you for reaching out via our Xfinity Community Forums. I can see why that would make you uneasy, and you did the right thing by being cautious. In some cases, Xfinity Mobile may ask for information like your SSN to verify identity or complete enrollment, and an IMEI can be requested to check device compatibility. Simply sharing your IMEI would not typically put your device at risk.

That said, if something feels off, it's always best to stop and verify before sharing personal information. Make sure you're working through an official Xfinity website or chat. You can learn more here:

Based on what you've shared, I can't say for certain whether this was a scam or a legitimate verification process. If you'd like us to take a closer look, please send a Direct Message with your full name and address.
