New router can't get an IP address

I have my own modem and my own WiFi router.

I want to replace my WiFi router.  However, as long as the MAC address is different, the new router cannot get the IP address (even if I release the IP address before I disconnect the cable).  Unfortunately, my new router does not support MAC address cloning.

Another person seemed to have a similar issue. (cf., https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/router-cant-get-an-ip-address/602dae9fc5375f08cdf04ae8 )

Is there a solution besides MAC address cloning?  Thanks!

Power down the router and the modem. Then power up the modem and wait for it to go online. Then when you power up the router it should receive an IP address if it's configured correctly (usually AUTO or DHCP).

If you have a modem you always need to reset it when you change the device connected directly to it if that device has a different MAC address then the previous device. If you skip the reset, the modem will ignore the new MAC address.

When posting about hardware problems it's enormously helpful to include the model numbers of the devices involved.

@BruceW Power cycling the modem was not the solution.  Resetting the modem is the key. The new router gets the IP now.  Thanks!
