To send a direct message:
Click "Sign In" if necessary
Click the "Direct Message" icon 
Click the "New message" (pen and paper) icon
The "To:" line prompts you to "Type the name of a person". Instead, type "Xfinity Support" there.
As you are typing a drop-down list appears. Select "Xfinity Support" from that list.
A "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line.
Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window   
Press Enter to send it

@user_ikc11o Let's work together to figure out why you aren't seeing that option to send us a DM. Can you tell me what you are seeing in the upper right hand corner of the screen? Does it say sign in at all?

my l my message in this chat keeps getting edited down when I press send. In the upper right, there is a message box which leads to search, the bell icon for notifications and the profile button

@user_ikc11o So you do see the direct message icon, and when you click it, it's taking you to a search bar? Can you type Xfinity Support in that box?
