I am looking to replace my XFi Gateway with my own modem. I am only using Xfinity for the internet, no other services.
I have my own Orbi router already so looking for recommendations on a modem and any other equipment necessary. Also would there be an impact to my current Internet package such as unlimited data if not using XFi?

@user_vhgvjj - Hello! That is a great question. Since you already have a high-quality Orbi mesh system, moving to a standalone modem is a common way to streamline your setup. Here is the breakdown of how that works with Xfinity:
1. Recommended Equipment
To get the most out of your Orbi router and Xfinity’s speeds, we recommend a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem. This ensures you can handle Gigabit speeds and provides better stability. Popular certified options include:
- Arris SURFboard SB8200 or S33: Excellent for high-speed tiers and very reliable.
- Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 or CM1200: Designed to pair seamlessly with other Netgear products like your Orbi.
- Motorola MB8611: Another top-tier DOCSIS 3.1 option with a 2.5Gbps port.
Note: You can always check the most up-to-date list of compatible devices for your specific speed tier here.
2. Impact on Data & Pricing
This is the most important part to consider. Currently, there can be a difference in how Unlimited Data is billed depending on your equipment and/or location, and even the current plan you subscribe to:
- With an Xfinity Gateway: Many customers use xFi Complete ($25/mo), which includes the modem rental and Unlimited Data.
Note: This is now an included feature in most of our new plan pricing!
- With Your Own Modem: If you switch to your own equipment, the $15/mo modem rental fee is removed (unless you already have a plan where the modem is being included). However, to keep Unlimited Data, it typically requires a standalone add-on of $30/mo (again, depending on your location and if there's a fee for Unlimited Data).
3. Next Steps
If you choose to move forward:
- Purchase your modem and connect the coaxial cable.
- Activate the new device easily via the Xfinity App.
- Return your XFi Gateway to any Xfinity Store or UPS Store to ensure the rental charges are removed from your account.
After looking everything over, if you still have questions, let us know! We can always take a closer look at your account and review the options specific to you if necessary :)
