Gigabit PRO availability in Boston and Waltham, MA

After seeing ads, reading articles, and browsing Xfinity's residential internet speed page, I encountered Gigabit PRO (6gbps symmetric download/upload) fiber connection for $300/mo. I also saw this: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/requirements-to-run-xfinity-internet-speeds-over-1-gbps

It says to order, I need to call Xfinity, which I did. The sales rep had literally NO IDEA this product existed. I was transferred to 4 other reps. None of them knew, and I was directed to business. They claimed it existed, but was a residential thing and would redirect me to residential.

Although I have been told that this embarrassing and somewhat horrifying customer (dis-)service debacle is unfortunately par for the course, I refused to give up, so here I am on the forums.

I am a scientist, and I do bioinformatic algorithm development and love exploring large genomic datasets. I am not a business. I have 3 server-grade workstations at home, one of which has a 10Gbps ethernet port (the other two are at 2.5Gbps with upgrades planned). If anyone can make use of this speed, I think I can.

How do I get in touch with someone who will help me? I want the following:

1. A service check in my area.

2. A quote on how much it would cost to dig and install service in my area (expected < $15,000) if not available.

3. A full list of equipment (e.g. racks for the switch, list of static IPs for setup, etc).

4. An explanation for why a huge national corporation can, with impunity, advertise services and instruct users to order it but not have any knowledgeable individuals able to provide information about that service (isn't that a little like false advertising? Availability notwithstanding).

Of course #4 is optional, I just wanted to make a snide comment and apologize -- but I did indeed waste 4 hours of my time on the phone, so I think it's somewhat deserved.

Please help me. I want this service and to understand availability in my area (specifically, to my home, as I've read that "area availability" doesn't tell the whole story with the elusive fiber connections like it often does with Xfinity's typical coax plans).

Hi, @lifethehound! Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit XFINITY over our forums page for help with the Gig pro inquiry. We are honored by your interest. This is definately not the experience that we like to hear about and I am sorry to learn that we have made you feel this way. I will be happy to turn that around.

To get started, I have just a couple of things that we need to ensure you are aware of before we proceed with this request for you. We will need to ensure that your home is within 1,760 feet from the node. The Gigabit Pro team will confirm this. We will then run a serviceability check to see if your home is eligible for the service. This process could take up to two weeks. The serviceability check will determine how much it will cost to run fiber optics to your home. If the price to run fiber is more than $8,800, you can elect to pay the amount over $8,800. If you choose not to pay this amount, we cannot process the Gigabit Pro request.

If your home passes the serviceability check, then I'd like to set clear expectations around pricing: There is a $500 activation fee and a $500 installation fee, totaling $1,000. Gigabit Pro service is $299.95 a month with a $19.95 monthly professional-grade equipment rental fee plus taxes. The service requires a two-year contract with a $1,150 early termination fee, which declines over the course of the contract. You will need to have a computer or other device capable of accepting 2 Gbps download/upload speeds to experience the full benefits of Gigabit Pro. The process to build fiber optics to your home could take several weeks if your home qualifies. We will communicate our progress along the way. Additionally, static IPs are only available through Comcast Business services.

Thanks a lot, Gabriel. You're already turning the experience around for the better. :-)

This jives with what I've seen online and expected. Just to confirm -- it looks like you've quoted the 2gbps speed, but I'm wondering about the 6gbps speed (my understanding is that the service started at 2gbps at its inception, grew to 3gbps, and just recently jumped to 6gbps, which spurred my interest).

How would I get in touch with the Gigabit Pro team to confirm serviceability/node distance and get a quote to run the fiber? Excited about next steps as I plan on moving shortly and would like my new home to be wired with the service. In fact, availability of the service may help me decide upon a couple of prospective options in Boston or Waltham. (Yes, speed is very important to me!).

Thanks.

Whoops, you're correct and the Gigabit Pro speed tier is now up to 6Gbps download and upload. Apologies for that!

The next step in order to confirm serviceability of the Gigabit Pro product would be for us to open a ticket with that team, so the process can get rollin'! :)
