Free tablet is it a scam?

I was upgrading my service to unlimited data and I was offered a free ipad. When it was time to go through approval for the iPad they asked for my birthday and social security number. I refused because it made me nervous. Is this a real offer or was it a scam?

@user_a9khsb, hi! Thank you for your post. Our promotions just changed, but we were offering a free 10th Generation iPad on new lines. You would still have to pay for the unlimited data for the line though. As a heads-up, some internet offers include a discount for adding a Unlimited Xfinity Mobile line. Tablets and smartwatches do not qualify for that offer.

Yesterday, we just launched a whole bunch of Black Friday deals. There are some really awesome savings to be had. You can find those at https://www.xfinity.com/mobile/learn/deals.

I had the same offer it is a scam I was told the total cost of my package would be 168$ on chat with an agent.  So I signed up for a 24 month package. he Ipad came I activated it, worked fine. Then the bill came for 225$ plus 30$ a month line charge for the IPad   When I called to complain about was told that the agent lied to me. That's a comcast agent on the phone, telling me a comcast agent on chat lied to me that there was no package like that and it did not go through billing. So she signed me up for 215$ package for 1 year and said to send Ipad back . Which I did now awaiting for the new bill and if I get refunded the 25$ activation charge and 52$ tax paid for purchase of Ipad.
