Collections with no balance

I ended my service, paid balance, and returned equipment. I am being messaged by a debt collection agency. Why is this the case and is it a scam? I made sure to pay my balance and return my equipment directly to a Xfinity store.

@user_u97hj8 Our team can check the status of that old account and provide some insight. If you could please send me a DM with your first and last name along with that account's full-service address, we can get started.

To send a "Direct Message" to Xfinity Support:
Click "Sign In" if necessary
Click the "Direct Messaging" icon in the top right corner
Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
The "To:" line prompts you to "Type the name of a person". Instead, type "Xfinity Support" there
 - As you are typing a drop-down list appears. Select "Xfinity Support" from that list
 - An "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line
Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
Press Enter to send it
