Challenging a "early cancelation fee"

I called on 6/15 to have my internet turned off on 6/20, after many years.  The result was my contract was renewed on the 15th, and when I turned it off, I'm charged an early cancellation fee of $110.  I called and there is some "investigation", but how long could that take?  Seems rather clear to me...
