Can I upgrade my Internet essentials modem

When I first enrolled in internet essentials, I upgraded to internet essentials plus. The rep mentioned I can take my current modem (Arris TG1682G) and exchange it for a new one at a storefront Xfinity store. Is this true? I feel like my current modem is outdated

I'm not sure I'd upgrade it unless you have problems or have a use for more local WiFi speed and clients (computer, phone, tablet, etc.) that can take advantage of it.  It's WiFi is faster than your internet connection with Internet Essentials Plus and most of the posts on here complaining about Xfinity equipment problems are along the lines of "my old XB3/XB6 worked great for years, but I have this problem with my XB7".  The latest Xfinity gateway is the XB8, but those are still rolling out and are prioritized for customers with high speed plans -- 900 or 1200Mbps.  In other words "if it ain't broke don't fix it."

Arris TG1682G is only one generation back on WiFi (WiFi 5/802.11ac) and it's a 24x8 DOCSIS 3.0 modem.  It's good for a cable speed up to 600 Mbps.  The WiFi 6/802.11ax spec came out in 2019 but didn't really hit mainstream until 2020 and there is still plenty of WiFi 5 gear on the market.  The WiFi on a TG1682G should be good for up to a raw data rate of 866 Mbps when using a WiFi 5 or WiFi 6 (802.11ax) client, perhaps faster with some clients but most clients only have a 2 stream radio and will top out at 866 unless both the client and the cable WiFi router support 160Mhz wide channels on the 5GHz band or support more than 2 streams.  I'm not sure if the TG1682G does and a lot of WiFi 5 clients don't.  Of course you never get the full raw data rate.  The rule of thumb is 2/3s is pretty normal close to the WiFi router and the best I've gotten is 3/4s.  That's still plenty fast for your internet speed with Internet Essentials Plus.
