Burying cable and internet underground

Hello! I am a project manager for a house we are renovating. We are currently relocating the electrical line (COMED) underground and we want to do the same with the cable and internet lines. I have a couple of questions:

1) We are running a 2" pipe in the ground for the electrical service. Can the cable and internet lines run in this same 2" pipe or does it need a separate pipe?

2) The homeowners are not living at the house for about a year while it's being remodeled, so they stopped their Comcast service. For us to schedule a technician to come out, do they need to start service again with Comcast? Or if not, how do we get started?

Thank you!

1.) It does work in that same space

2.)Not necessarily, it does depend on why you need the tech to come out so I need more details on that one.

Thank you for the quick response! That's great news on #1.

For #2, we would want Comcast to install the cable and internet lines underground. We will have the electrical pipe buried soon. When does that typically happen? Would that happen now when everything is still pretty open construction-wise, or can that happen closer to when the homeowners move in, when construction is more finished?

You're very welcome!

We would prefer the work to be closed to finished or done because:

During the visit, if our technician determines that a new underground cable line needs to be installed, they may have some basic questions about your yard.

  • Common questions may include:
    • Do you have a sprinkler system?
    • Is there an invisible dog fence?
    • Would you like to be home when we are doing the work?
  • The technician will then submit a request order for an underground crew to replace the underground cable line.
    • Please feel free to share any questions or concerns about the work we'll be doing with the technician while they are visiting your home.
    • Our technician may also run a temporary cable line to ensure that you continue to have Xfinity service until your underground cable line is installed.
  • Note: Depending on the location of the connection to the main line, the underground cable line that provides service to your home may go through neighboring properties.
    • In these instances, the pathway will be restricted to the public utility right of way and an attempt will be made to contact affected property owners.
  1. Underground Utilities Locate Request is Submitted (If Applicable) — Before our underground crew comes to your home, an order will be placed by the local Dig Safe (811) company to your local utilities, (e.g., electric and gas companies), so they can mark up where their utility lines are buried underground.
    • The utility companies' locators will use flags, spray paint or chalk that will eventually wash away.
      • This work must be completed before we can start digging, as it helps ensure that we do not damage any utility lines in the process.
  2. Utilities Are Marked (If Applicable) — Once the utility companies' locators have marked where their lines are, we'll be notified that it's safe for us to begin.
  3. Underground Crew Assigned and Work is Scheduled — Once the utilities lines are marked, our underground crew will come out and install the new cable line.
    • If you requested to be home for the work or if you have pets or locked gates, we'll contact you to schedule the work.
    • If you didn't request to be home, we'll notify you of the date range when the work should be completed.
  4. Drop Complete — Your new underground cable line has been installed.
    • If a temporary cable line was set up, it'll be removed.

I no longer work for Comcast.
