Activate a new phone, keep my phone number

I just got a new phone yesterday. I want to keep my phone number. I called Xfinity support. I was told another number was needed to complete activation and then an agent would call me & my number would be restored. Never got a call back. Instead I had no service for several hours. I eventually got through to an agent on chat who “fixed” everything. Then I called & texted some friends & family, who had no idea who I was b/c I had been given a new number.  I tried chat again but at point the new phone died & I gave up. Now I have no service again. Wi-Fi calling doesn’t work. So I have to try the chat option again. I don’t understand. I kept repeating I wanted to keep my number both on the call and over chat. Why is keeping my number so difficult?
