2 Gig Below Expected

hello. I recently switched to 2 gig internet with the xB8-T gateway and never see speeds above ~700mbps. What could be causing the speed to be less than half the advertised speeds? Thank you

That is a great question @user_63s34r and thank you for reaching out via our Xfinity Community Forums about this concern. Are you testing the speed of your Wi-Fi network or are you hardwired into your gateway? The reason for this speed limit is usually your connection type, which is why we ask: Are you testing the speed of your Wi-Fi network or are you hardwired into your gateway?

  • Wi-Fi Speed: Most devices (even new ones) will see maximum speeds lower than 2 Gig over Wi-Fi due to device limitations, distance, and interference. Getting 700 Mbps is common on the fastest Wi-Fi bands.

  • Wired Speed: To see speeds above 1 Gigabit (1000 Mbps), your testing device must be plugged into the 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port (the one with the colored stripe on the back of the xB8-T) and your computer must have a 2.5 Gbps network card installed.

If you are using the correct hardware and are still capped around 700 Mbps, please power-cycle the gateway by unplugging it for 60 seconds.

If that doesn't fix it, please send us a Direct Message with your full name and address, so we can check the signal to your home.

Good to know. Thanks for the explanation. I was on WiFi. I will check a wired connection.

I'd like to add that I had the same problem (capped speeds approaching 1 Gbps on both WiFi and ethernet) and tried using an xfinity customer service chat to fix the problem, which unfortunately accomplished nothing.

Interesting that the internet service speed provided is 2 Gig but only 1 port on the provided modem/router sends a 2000 Mbps signal, and the other 3 ports are capped.

There was no mention of this in the documentation or installation instructions that came with the product.

After switching the ethernet cable of my PC to the RED labeled port 4 on the back of the router, speeds over 2000 Mbps were achieved.

Thank you for clarifying the issue and helping solve the problem. I wish xfinity would include some more information / documentation when they send out install kits for people.
