Unwarranted $100 “installation fee” charge on my monthly bill

I’m writing about an unwarranted charge on my September 15, 2026 bill.  A $100 “installation fee” is listed for August 19, 2026.  That charge should be reversed.

These are the facts: I reported a problem with my internet service around August 17.  The internet was freezing multiple times each day, and even when it worked, its performance crawled along at speeds reminiscent of 1990’s dial-up service.  An Xfinity service tech came to our house on the 19th and confirmed the internet signal reaching the modem was bad, and that the the internet signal entering the house also was bad.  He eventually traced the problem to the wire coming off the telephone pole behind our house.  He fixed the problem at the pole, and I thought “good service.”

I had been trying to register my own Motorola modem in place of the rented Xfinity modem we had previously used.  Registering your own modem is normally a trivial DIY online process, but our failing internet service made the registration impossible.  After the Xfinity service tech got our internet signal flowing again, he stuck around while I successfully registered the Motorola modem.

I can only imagine that the $100 “installation fee” is related to the substitution of my own modem for the rented Xfinity modem.  I didn’t request any help with the modem substitution.  I consider the $100 charge to be unwarranted, and I request a refund.

I believe the facts are on my side.  I’m appealing to Xfinity to correct the error, and I believe that you will after reading this account.  I plan to file an FCC complaint if Xfinity declines a refund.

Thank you for helping me.
