lied to by billing and cancellation department in 2022, found out via a collection letter in 2026

I cancelled xfinity in aug 2022 by calling them, as one does (because they did not leave this function on their web platform, how convenient. the people I called today said they saw no record of cancellation, how convenient). My lease ended that month, and I had actually moved out 2 months before that. I'm sure a lot of xfinity customers are young people who constantly bounce around from apartment to apartment and even state to state.

But later I noticed that I kept getting charged at odd and sharply increasing monthly rates in September and October. I called them at the time, took 3 hours or something but they figured it out and reassured me that it was all cleared and resolved.

It was NOT. They must've marked a residual balance, I suspect they still charged me for September and October but at the normal rate that I was paying before, which was NOT what they communicated to me at the time.

It's been 4 years and I had no idea this stupid issue from 2022 was still around, until I got a collections communication today. So that's why my credit score was looking anemic?? I called them again for 2 hours today and between me and 5 other people, collectively discovered that no one could help me, and of course credit card history is no help because no credit card keeps transaction numbers longer than 2 years and this incident was from 4 years ago.

This is not a matter of "maybe I'll just pay the unrightful bill anyways to get rid of the problem" because I can't trust them to keep reputable track of my bills and payment histories. Even during my calls today they had an incomplete jumble of payment records which contradicted my credit card history and underrepresented the payments I made.

Give me 4 years and 8 hours back! In terms of the hopefully neglible impact to credit score, a paid collections cannot be differentiated from an unpaid collection within FICO 8 standards, but a deletion/retraction would suffice. Me paying this off resolves NOTHING and probably enables their scheme of charging-to-collections.

The last of 5 people I talked today told me I have to go into a physical store because the call centers don't have any visibility on past orders or bills. I'd have to go out of state to find a store? If you have issues like this, please don't bother calling. Their call centers are useless and have a history of lying to you.

purely ranting: so the people I called today also said there was no history of cancellation but services were formally stopped at end of September (odd, not what I was told). Not my fault that there's no option to conduct and properly document cancellations via the xfinity website. I definitely spent hours of my life in 2022 across multiple sessions though, so IDK what to tell you. I took xfinity at the time because I was young and stupid, but in hindsight I would gladly pay triple the price just to avoid having their SPECTER of CONTINUOUS CONFUSION looming over my life for nearly a decade. The best decision you can make as a young person in college or getting your first job, is to get your wifi from ANYONE ELSE.

Financial advice for a young person:

- don't go into credit card debt, it's real money

- don't smoke or do drugs, it might feel fine now but there will be costly consequences later.

- don't get internet with xfinity, they'll make up charges and find ways to send you to a collections agency and mess up your credit scores many many years later, possibly haunting you into your homebuying years. I can't say for sure how much the impact is with credit scores being so opaque, but please don't invite this energy vampire into your life.
