I'm receiving billing statements even after canceling my xfinity service

I canceled the service and returned the device in July (the system says return completed). I received a bill for approximately $178 in August and contacted the customer service center for assistance. The customer service agent told me she would take care of it and that I didn't need to pay it because I hadn't used their service after July 16th. But I still received the bill, which is now $287! I can't get customer service because my service was disconnected. This is ridiculous.
