Email about account info update

My wife received a email this morning stating that we needed to update our payment method to avoid service interruption, due to outdated payment details or issues with your bank or credit card.

Our last payment has cleared, next one not due for about 10 days, and our payment method is good. It's the second time in the last 3-4 months I've had to deal with this. We assume this is a SCAM, but who can we check with at Xfinity to confirm this?

Hello, and thank you for reaching out to us here for help with the suspision email. Good on you for being alert! If you receive an unexpected call, text, or email requesting that you make a payment on your account, we recommend you check your account balance first. Then make a payment directly through the Xfinity website or thru the Xfinity app. Xfinity will not request a specific payment method such as merchant gift cards, wire transfer, PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle. Remember to always check the email address of the sender. If the email has an unrecognizable address but claims to be from Xfinity, don’t trust it. Never open links or attachments in unsolicited emails or text messages. They may execute a disguised program such as malware, adware, spyware, or viruses that can damage or steal your data. Our team would be happy to help check, user_8j09ba

... We assume this is a SCAM ...

That's what it sounds like.

If you check your email with Comcast's Xfinity Connect webmail (https://connect.xfinity.com/), look for the XFINITY Verified Email logo next to any message that claims to be from Comcast/Xfinity. Note that anyone can insert an XFINITY Verified image in the body of an email, so it's important to note not only the presence of that image, but that it is in the correct locations:

  • proceeding the email subject line in the list of emails
  • above the subject line when the email is opened.

See https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/comcast-verified-email for examples of valid logo placement. A logo in the body of the email does not count.

If the logo is missing when you view the message in webmail, the message is not from Comcast. Unfortunately, AFAIK the logo is not present when you view one of their messages in an email app or program. It's only visible when you view their web email site in a browser.

Samples of recent phishing messages can be found at https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/alerts under "Top Phishing Scams".

To report a scam email to Comcast, follow the "Report Spam and Phishing Emails" link on https://internetsecurity.xfinity.com/help/report-abuse and scroll down to the "Report Phishing Emails" section.
