I have a double play plan with basic TV and performance pro internet. I rarely watch TV live using the TV box & a TV. I stream with OnDemand on my PC or the Stream app whenever I want to watch anything. Because I rarely used the TV box, I disconnected it to save electrictity. It's been about 2.5 years since I disconnected the TV box with only minor internet connection issues.
The issue & resolution:
I recently started having persistent internet connection issues and had a technician come out to troubelshoot. The technician checked the line signals on both ends, both were good so he recommended replacing the gateway as it was most likely the issue due to its age.
During the gateway replacement the tech. was not able to continue setting up the new gateway until their system was able to connect to the TV box. We reconnected the TV box, put on a line filter, then spent a bit more time to troubleshoot completing the gateway set up. After everything was back up and running, the tech. recommended that I keep the TV box connected, even if I do not use it, so everything continues to work properly.
The followup questions:
Is it really required to have the TV box connected when I do not use/need it?
Could my internet connection be negatively affected if I do not having the TV box connected?
