When it comes to linear channels there is a limited amount of broadband that determines what a company can use. Comcast has eliminated at lot of 1080i channels since converting from MPEG2 to MPEG4. This of course included most premium HD channels (HBO and others).
None of us know what their future plans for this gained space are. Maybe 4K channels, or other future needs. At any rate, they are betting people with premium channels would use On Demand for watching premium channels in 720p. So that leaves about 1 linear channel in HD for each for HBO, and the other premium channels offered. Whether is business decision works out for them only the future will tell.
The real problem is that this is hidden from the customer, who, like myself, may have had all Premium channels from the two major satellite providers in HD for many years. We are told we are getting all the Premium channels when we sign up for Comcast. Who would think that would mean most of them are in SD. In fact when I realized what had happened, I called Comcast "support" to ask where the missing HD channels were. The representative was audibly shocked when she realized how few Premium channels were in HD. It appears that even the "support" people aren't informed about this.
