I changed my internet to Xfinity a few months ago. My TV has been with Xfinity for years, but I use a TiVo box.  Over the past few months, I found that a few of my TV channels have gone black. Yesterday, I had a Xfinity guy out to try to figure out what was going on. Neither he, nor whoever he talked to on the phone could figure it out. Reading a bunch of TiVo forums, I learned that Xfinity is moving some channels to "TVIP". It appears that this is a regional thing with different channels switching in different regions. TiVo doesn't do TVIP, so that explained my loss of those channels. Thus far, they are kind of "minor" channels (TCM, TBN, CMTV, CSPAN, NewsMax to name a few) so I can live with it. Anyway, I wonder if people who have a "TVIP compatible" cable box haven't changed their viewing habits at all, but that box is now eating up Internet bits instead of TV bits. To add insult to injury, the box probably just stays on the last channel watched, so it would eat Internet bits until the next time they changed channels. Might be a clue for some. ... View more

Mine is plugged into the UPS that also protects the stuff in my home entertainment center. I have had very good luck over the years with APC, but there are lots of adequate units. You can get them at most electronics stores (or Amazon of course). Depending on what you want to protect, a small unit (500 VA or so) will hold the gateway up for hours, but if you start adding computers, monitors, cable boxes, TVs, etc. you will need something larger. The gateway I had before I switched to xfinity had an internal battery, but the one I have now doesn't have that capability, and I already had the UPS, so I didn't care. Remember that if your power goes out, it may go out somewhere your xfinity feed passes through and although your stuff is just fine, theirs isn't, so you won't have service anyway. There is another thread her that talks about this. Some people have reported success by downloading the Xfinity app and setting it up from there. They have to do it on their end. First "customer service rep" said they would do it, but it would take 24 hours to take effect.... it didn't. I called back and that one gave me the same story, but this time it worked.  Good luck. ... View more

I was successful at getting the call center to disable the Xfinity Voice mail. The person said they had to do it on their end, and it would take 24 hours to accomplish, and it worked. My local answering machine answered on the 4th ring, which must have been sooner than  the Xfinity machine answered, so the problem didn't arise quickly. However, if I was on the phone, I got some call waiting beeps (which I ignore -- most are telemarketers) and the call went to the Xfinity voice mail. Now, I still get the beeps, which I still ignore, but the phone continues to ring for the calling party. In years gone by, if the line was busy, the caller was cued by the busy signal to call later. I have only had Xfinity Internet for a month or so, and am nowhere near the data cap. I have my own router (ASUS AX3000), and have the Xfinity Gateway in Bridge mode and turned off it's Wi-Fi, so everything goes through the ASUS and gets logged by device, by hour. The total the ASUS shows tracks pretty closely to what "My Account" shows. Without that sort of information, it is a guessing game. Somebody poaching wi-fi? rogue device/app?  No way to tell, but some of the numbers people have mentioned make me think one of those. I have found that my average "web surfing" data use went from about 3 GB/day to about 4. Likewise, my wife's iphone gaming went up from 3 to almost 5 GB/day. Usually. I just did that. but the guy at the store said that there were a few exchanges in  our area that it wan't possible. I went into a local store and the guy there did most of it. I wasn't interested in changing to Xfinity Internet/Voice unless I could port the phone number.   It took a couple of days without phone service to "port" the number. The story I got from a person at the ATT call center was that the ATT account has to be active. then the requesting service (Xfinity) makes the port request for a certain date, when the request is approved, the phone quits working until the requested date comes along and it can be activated. It sounds like your problem is exactly the same as  mine. Advanced Call Forwarding is needed to set up NoMoRobo... I have spent a couple of hours with the call center to no avail.  I can't seem to make them understand that the feature throws an error and is greyed out. The frustration of a bunch of robocalls is less than the frustration of waiting for them to recognize something is obviously wrong on there end. ... View more
