what is the WPS button on my modem for?

I thought I had ethernet connection. Turns out to be Wi-fi. My modem has a button on top labeled WPS. What is that for?

WPS stands for Wi-Fi Protected Setup. It's a security standard that tries to make connecting wireless devices easier. If you are connecting a new device that supports WPS, you can push the button on your router, then your device will connect to it automatically.

FWIW, I always advise posters to never use WPS. It is a potential security risk. Always disable it and manually configure your network settings !!;
