intermittent connectivity

Like many others, my connectivity is very intermittent.  At most, I use a laptop and my iphone at one time.  Calling xfinity is a waste of time, no help.

Is this with a WiFi connection ? If so, for a test, does a computer hardwired directly to the router / gateway device with an ethernet cable have the same problem ?
