T-3 Timeouts & intermittent connection drops

Hello,

I'm having daily T-3 timeouts and will lose connection several times per day. I'll list the troubleshooting steps I've taken below and also include the signal levels from my modem.

 

  • Purchased new Netgear CM1000 Docsis 3.1 modem. I also have an Arris SB8200 that also experiences same issues.
  • Purchased and ran a new 50 ft RG-6 quad shielded coax cable from demarcation point thru attic directly into office wall outlet. Cable from wall outlet connects directly into the modem.
  • No splitters on the coax line. I've checked all connections are clean and tight.
  • My signal levels hover around ~11dBmV for downstream and ~31dBmV for upstream so I purchased and installed a 10db attenuator directly on the modem. The levels shown below are with the 10db attenuator installed. T-3 timeouts happened with and without the attenuator but the power levels seem more within spec with it, so I've left it installed for now.
  • When the T-3 timeouts happen, I've noticed the upstream power levels spike to high 40s or 50s dBmV.

Please let me know if there are any other troubleshooting steps I can take. I've pretty much run out of ideas and beginning to think the issue is outside of my home and possibly at the node.

It's probably best to book a tech visit for this. Bear in mind that if the premises facing techs can not find or fix a problem at your home, it is they who are responsible for escalating it to their line / network / maintenance dept. techs. The problem may lie beyond your home in the local neighborhood infrastructure somewhere but it is their S.O.P. to start at the home.

Good morning EG,

Thank you for your timely reply. Would it be possible to escalate the issue? My girlfriend and I are both currently working from home and the intermittent connection drops are an unwelcomed headache. This past weekend I ran new RG-6 cable in hopes of correcting the issue but it did not stop the problem. Would a tech be able to monitor the line to my modem and see the intermittent signal issues?

From what I've been reading here lately, unfortunately, it's very hard to get a tech visit right now what with the ongoing pandemic. Good luck with it !

Just had another outage this morning during a team meeting. Below are the levels at the time of the outage. I captured 3 different readings. The upstream channels are going out of spec from what I can see.

I would remove that overall attenuator. It's hurting the upstream power more than it's helping the downstream power. If you want to lower the downsteam power without affecting the upstream, you can use a forward path only type of attenuator.
