Speed increase from 150 to 300. 2.4 seems stuck in the mud.

Speed increase from 150 to 300. 2.4 seems stuck in the mud.

So this past Friday whilst inquiring about a rate increase my wife had our speed bumped from 150 to 300Mbps. Seemed to go smoothly modem retstarted, router restarted, devices restarted. Speed on ethernet anb 5Ghz top out at or above the 300 that was promised. However my 2.4 is incredibly slow when compared to those. Yes I know hard wired will always be faster as well as 5Ghz but this seems way out of proportion. The thing is I am in the room where the Gateway & router reside.

Gateway = Cisco DPC3941T, Router = Apple Airport Extreme connected vie Cat6 cable. I've tried a few different channels but that didn't help. This can't be normal can it? I have some screenshots to illustrate my point.Xfinity Speed Test Ethernet.pngEthernet5Ghz.jpg5Ghz2.4Ghz.jpg2.4Ghz

Wifi speeds are NEVER as fast as an ethernet connection and ethernet is what your speed tier is based on.

Thanks for the quick reply Robert. I realize the speed is based on ethernet. I also realize 5Ghz is always faster than 2.4 but I cannot believe that it should only be about 1/8 of that. Why would I get 300+ on my 5 and only 45 on the 2.4. Same room. I'll admit I am a network specialist but this seems like an awfully big difference. BTW I tested the wireless on an iPhone X so it's not as though I am using an older piece of equipment.

Well the 5 GHz is wireless AC and 20/40/80 MHz bandwidths while the 2.4 for most devices now mainly use Wireless-N at 20/40 MHz if you enable it. There’s a chance you might only be using 20MHz. FYI while I had that device before my 2.4 only topped off around 100 even on newer devices.

Eh, that seems about normal in my experience. Typically the speeds are limited to some degree on the client side. I'm not familiar with Apple hardware, so I can only speculate. My Chromebook will do ~50Mbps on my 2.4 GHz network and ~300 on the 5GHz network. That seems pretty close to what you are seeing. You might want to consider posting on the Apple forums, they might have some suggestions for you specific to your hardware.

Just Google 'max speed for 2.4 wifi' .   I think you'll find it ain't ever going to do much better than yours is doing.
