SNR issue(?) started today, DL speed dropped from 700+ Mbps to 20-30 Mbps

I had a similar issue over a year ago, and tbh I do not recall the resolution, but I have had zero issues with our internet until today since that time. I pasted the cable connection information and the log near the bottom. Went through the usual routine, reset my modem and router, connected directly to my modem, even factory reset the modem, called Xfinity and they will eventually send someone. I don't understand how this can just suddenly happen. I live in an apartment in Katy, Tx., I've made no changes to my wiring (in fact I rewired everything a couple months ago to get rid of a ground loop issue) or moved anything where the coax comes in.

 

Any guidance or assistance is appreciated.

The upstream power is too high / out of spec.  That can cause random disconnects, spontaneous re-booting of the modem, speed, packet loss, and latency problems.

In a self troubleshooting effort to try to obtain better connectivity / more wiggle room, check to see if there are there any excess/unneeded coax cable splitters in the line leading to the modem that can be eliminated/re-configured. Any splitters that remain should be high quality and cable rated for 5-1002 MHz, bi-directional, and no gold colored garbage types like GE, RadioShack, RCA, Philips, Leviton, Magnavox, and Rocketfish from big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Target, Wal-Mart etc. Splitters should be swapped with known to be good / new ones to test

If there aren't any unneeded splitters that can be eliminated and if your coax wiring setup can't be reconfigured so that there is a single two way splitter connected directly off of the drop from the street/pole with one port feeding the modem and the other port feeding the rest of the house/equipment with additional splits as needed, and you've checked all the wiring and fittings for integrity and tightness and refresh them by taking them apart then check for and clean off any corrosion / oxidation on the center wire and put them back together again, then perhaps it's best to book a tech visit to investigate and correct.

Hmm, I'll go back through my wiring from the wall out and check everything tomorrow I guess.

 

Not sure if this might help, but here's the flow of the single coax from the wall plate: RG6 to an APC SurgeArrest Here , RG6 out to a Jensen Iso-Max Transformer Here , RG6 into a BAMF splitter Here , then 1 RG6 to the Xfinity Cable/DVR and 1 RG6 into my Netgear CM1000 modem, with Cat5e to my Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router. As far as where the coax comes into my unit, the cable is run underground into a box on the building, so there's no splitter I'm assuming other than the distribution from there, not counting the one I'm using as a necessity.

 

I added the APC and Jensen roughly 2-3 months ago, I was addressing a ground loop hum so I rewired everything, all new RG6, HDMI's Cat5e, and did a lot of wire management, so nothing has moved as it's all zip tied and secured. Is there anything I can do besides going through all the wiring and connections and restarting my modem to address the upstream power issue? They're supposed to be sending a tech, but who knows when.

Adding to @EG one by one bypass each of the 3 mentioned and check the signal but for sure the cable shouldn’t go through the surge arrest

That did it, speeds are back to 9 ms. ping, 700+ down and 18 up. I posted the cable connection below for comparison with the prior numbers, just because.

 

Looks like it was the Jensen filter. I bypassed the APC first, didn't do anything, then decided to skip ahead and go straight from the wall to the modem, no issues. I was pretty sure it wasn't the splitter, as that was an existing piece I've had in the setup for over a year and had no issues. So, I'm now going from the wall plate with RG6 to the splitter, out with RG6 to the modem and DVR respectively. What puzzles me is this just started after 2.5 months, I was very thorough when I was setting everything up, checking to make sure the digital cable signal was good and the internet was fine. Maybe the filter failed? I suppose it doesn't matter truthfully.

 

Side note: to overcome the groundloop hum, my components (DVR, desktop PC, and PS4) are using HDMI straight to the Vizio P65-F1, with a fiber optic cable from the TV to Onkyo TX-NR585 receiver. No hum, and it also fixed a 4K flicker problem I was having with the desktop. The only caveat is the max sample rate and bit depth for desktop audio is 24 bit 48000 Hz, but I'll take that over incessant hum and line noise in my audio system.

Do you think an attentuator Here  would fix the upstream issue? Could an attenutator possibly effect the downstream negatively, since the power on it ranges from .8 - 2.4? Xfinity will eventually dispatch a tech (at least I was told they will and call me when they do), and I do want one to come if there's something they can do to address it.

Don't use an overall attenuator like that one. Yes, it will lower the downstream power but it will raise the upstream power and make it even worse. You would need a *forward path only* type of attenuator that would not affect the upstream power. You should also change that BAMF splitter out for the type that I suggest earlier (5 to 1002). That BAMF splitter is engineered for satellite TV systems, not cable systems, so it can actually make things worse.

Are there other splitters that maybe you don’t know about? Check your modem levels at point of entry to compare.

At EG: I found This online, would the 3 or 5db model be in the right range for db reduction and frequencies for upstream? For the splitter I found This , seems to be perfect for this application. Please share your opinion on them, and I'll order them (or something else if you would share with me) today.

 

At CCAndrew: No, unless there are any between the junction box on the side of my building at my complex or in the wall. The drop for the coax in my unit is one, but it might (must be I suppose) be split in the wall, since there's a wall plate in the living room where my equipment is and the other side of the wall, in our master bedroom. I could pull the cover and see what I can see.

And again, it is used for reducing the downstream power without raising the upstream power.

 

And that is a very good splitter !

Great, I've just ordered them both from Amazon. I saw the FPA, I wasn't sure but I should have asked about it instead of the Soontai one. Glad to hear about that splitter as well, looks like it's exactly what I need. Thanks again EG for everything. If this thread doesn't get locked, I'll do my best to post an updated cable connection after I receieve both and install them. The FPA shows it's a ways off, due 6/22, the splitter being here on 6/17.

Tried different combinations of splitter and FPA placements, same issue with slight changes. After removing splitter and putting FPA on back of modem netted best numbers, made the decision to move the modem into our bedroom and run Cat 5e to router, and ran cable from wallplate in living room direct to the cable box/DVR (below, no logs so far).

I didn't really want to move the modem, but it seemed having a splitter period put the upstream into the low 50's, no matter what I did and the modem would generate logs. Sure, there's likely a splitter in my wall (I removed both wall plates but the gang boxes were snug and I didn't want to attempt to remove them), but being in an apartment limits your options, since the cable is running underground into the box on the building, there's no external wires visible.

 

I'll continue to check the connection and logs, but I'm not going to hold my breath on a tech coming out due to everything going on, although I'd like one to come and at least look for themselves.
