Network Attached Storage via external USB port on an Xfinity-compatible wireless cable modem/router?

Can anyone recommend an Xfinity-compatible wireless router/cable modem with an external USB port that will allow an exFAT-formatted USB drive to function as seamless, cross-platform (Win7\MacOSX) Network Attached Storage so that both platforms can see and read/write to the USB NAS via Ethernet?  This seems like a reasonable user request, to me!

I thought I had this solved when I bought an ARRIS cable modem/router that was listed by Xfinity Tech Support as "Xfinity-compatible", but it turned out that the Arris router's USB NAS support is only suitable for use with Windows PCs...as soon as you add Macs to your home ethernet network, all kinds of bizarre incompatibilities appear.
