Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

Looking around the forums, don't see a whole lot of answers here, so here goes:

Just moved and got Xfinity.  I've run the speed checker every night when my streaming goes all wonky and, surprise, the speeds drop significantly (providing I can even get online at all to check).  I had it on all day yesterday to see if there were any interruptions and there were none.  Until 8:15 pm on the dot.  DL speed was 3.1-1.2.  Then it cut off for 10 minutes.  Fifth night in a row now.

So...I'm guessing prime time is killing my speeds since it predictably returns to 10-20 mbps around 10:15-10:30.  Is there someone specifically to contact that is not going to give me the condescending "did you power cycle your modem" or "did you reset your modem" line?  Obviously, I've done that to no avail and the problem rests outside my apartment and not within.  Waiting on hold with multiple transfers is giving me a rash.  Any advice or guidance is most welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Did you power cycle your modem?  Nah, I'm just kidding. Smiley Wink

Check your signal levels (upstream and downstream) when everything is working fine and again when you're having issues. Post those and we can further advise.

Re: Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

Thanks for some of these tips!  When it goes wonky again, I'll post the bad and ugly.  Here's what it looks like when it's running well:

Downstream Bonded Channels

Channel Status Modulation Channel ID Frequency Power SNR
1 Locked QAM256 15 603000000 Hz 3.0 dBmV 41.9 dB
2 Locked QAM256 14 597000000 Hz 4.7 dBmV 43.2 dB
3 Locked QAM256 16 609000000 Hz 3.3 dBmV 41.9 dB
4 Locked QAM256 19 627000000 Hz 4.8 dBmV 42.8 dB
5 Locked QAM256 20 633000000 Hz 5.6 dBmV 43.2 dB
6 Locked QAM256 21 639000000 Hz 4.9 dBmV 42.6 dB
7 Locked QAM256 22 645000000 Hz 5.1 dBmV 43.2 dB
8 Locked QAM256 23 651000000 Hz 4.5 dBmV 42.5 dB

Upstream Bonded Channels

Channel Status Channel Type Channel ID Symbol Rate Frequency Power
1 Locked ATDMA 71 5120 ksym/sec 30100000 Hz 40.0 dBmV
2 Locked ATDMA 70 5120 ksym/sec 23700000 Hz 40.0 dBmV
3 Locked ATDMA 72 5120 ksym/sec 36500000 Hz 40.0 dBmV
4 Not Locked Unknown 0 0 ksym/sec 0 Hz 0.0 dBmV

I noticed that my leases are much shorter than I'm used to seeing on the specs (default was 30 minutes), so I've reset that to go a little longer.  Fingers crossed it's something that simple.

Some of the other tips of things that I've looked at:  yes, my modem/router is in a central location in my place; yes, I have a *lot* of devices, but I turn off WiFi religiously on those I'm not using; IPv6 readiness was 10/10 on the handy test I ran which you so nicely provided; and pings and traceroutes came back with good numbers (I'll post those if you really want them).

Again, thanks!  If I can prevent more paperclips dying to reach my reset button, my office supplies will thank you too!

Downstream Bonded Channels

Sorry for the delay in posting this, but here are the numbers when my Mbps is under 2.  I got a gap in internet usage to post this, so hopefully I have enough juice to get it through.

What kind of modem are you using? Kinda looks like an Arris/Motorola if so can you go into the event log and share some of the data see if you are getting any T3 or T4 timeouts also interested to see if you are having uncorrectable errors show up.

Re: Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

Hi MGinVA, apologies for your experiences with your internet service. Upon review I am not showing any signals to your modem, is it currently plugged in and are you still experiencing slow speeds?

Thank you

Re: Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

I had to go out of town unexpectedly and I turned it off!  I didn't think anyone was going to respond to this thread, so I figured I'd leave off while I was gone.  I'll be back late this week and I sure would love some input.

P.S., thanks for the response!

Aaand, back home again, it's 2043 on Sunday night and download speed is 1.05 while upload is 1.91.  Could have set my watch to it.

Re: Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

So I have a band-aid that partially solved my problems, in case anyone is still following this thread.  It may work for you?

I put a Wi-Fi Analyzer app on my cell phone and walked over to my Roku and checked what channels were the best.  Although my modem channels don't go up to the channels that were strongest (i.e. the app said channels 13 or 14, I only have up to 11), I managed to find one channel I did have that was stronger than the rest.  Then, instead of choosing "automatic" under channel choices in my modem's settings and changed it to the strongest channel the app reported, my drop off is SIGNIFICANTLY less (like instead of 5-10 times during prime time, only 1-2 times).  It isn't perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better than it was.  Currently, it's 1946 on a Sunday night and I'm consistently getting 15-19 Mbps.

Still, any suggestions, I'm open!

Hi - just you don't feel alone - I am experiencing the same problem. I am in Eastern time so my poor performance starts around 9 pm every night.  I stream hockey and without fail - around 9 PM, I lose my high definition and at times the feed just dies. Unlike you, I am not technically smart with all of this. I have called and chatted - and each time they tell me they optimzed something and the problem will not happen again. But it does - every night. Unfortunately, I live in an area where Comcast or Satellite are my only choices - so I'm stuck with Comcast. Thanks for letting me vent and letting you know its not just you. Tom

Good to know it's not me!  Sorry that you're sharing my pain, Tom.

I wonder if Comcast got sued for breach of contract in a mass tort/class action if it would make a difference.  It seem that this is the ONLY industry where you pay full price for something that you only part-time get.  Maybe if they would charge part-time prices, I wouldn't quite be so salty!  This is definitely not an example of "you get what you pay for."

Same issue here and very frustrating.  If I wasnt moving soon, I would switch providers.  At my summer house in New Hampshire I have DSL with the same speed and rarely see any issues.

Re: Internet speeds drop/stop every night between 8pm and 10pm

It's funny that comcast has tv spots saying that at&t lies on the speeds when xfinity slows down religiously every night at peak hours... It's certainly not the modem, not the router, just too much usage for the bandwidth that xfinity has for my condo complex, as without doing anything it goes back to normal at 11 pm when people starts going to bed. My condo has a contract with comcast and internet is included, so nothing we can do about it. That's why Comcast is the most hated company in the US. It's only going to get worst without net neutrality rules, they will push their own paid services and throttle everyone else.
