Been down solid for 3 days now, spotty for a month.  I'm done.  Comcast confirmed to me that they kno there is a widespread issue, but no other info.  Supervisor I spoke to on Monday was supposed to call me back yesterday with more info, but SURPRISE, no call.  Just got off the phone with support again... New supervisor will call me in the am.  Great.

Im done with Comcast.  They're a joke.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Just came across this today; had noticed I have been getting constant time outs with no real understanding of why. But finally wanted to do something about it after it being extremely bad this past week.

I had spent all day trying to figure out what it was; thought it was DNS problems, or possible some bad cables. Only to find out, that it's the modem.

So, from what I'm reading here is that SB6121 owners are stuck here waiting for a modem firmware update? Is there not much more we can do short of buying a new modem?

I'm sure it's pretty much the same as everyone else's but I'll post mine anyways:

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Exactly the same setup as you:  SB612x, Time Capsule (1st generation, running latest firmware, I think 7.6.1)

My problems seemed to start when I started fiddling around with IPv6 settings -- have you done same or are you running IPv4 only?  PM me and we can compare settings on TC?

Thx,

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

So, I hate to be that guy, but...

I replaced my modem and everything works perfectly.

I'm a little miffed to be honest. I was so sure it was something more complicated. Brand new modem (one month old at the time the failures began) suddenly starting power cycling...

It still seems weird to me that we all started having the same problem around the same time, but this seems like a giant wrench in my understanding of the problem. There was no new firmware and I didn't really do anything differently. Here was my exact procedure:

1) Acquired new modem from Motorola (via warranty).

2) Plugged in new modem for 6 hours while I ran back to work (did not call Comcast right away).

3) Came home, had internet, but very slow. Checked; had one upstream channel and three downstream channels.

4) Called Comcast, told the dude my modem was new, asked about provisioning. He said yeah, here [insert blinking lights, etc.]. Received all channels down and up.

5) Running perfectly, all systems go. My downstream power numbers: 2, 3, 3. Upstream power: 46, 45, 46.

6) For the record, I did email Comcast Steve, not sure if that had any impact.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

I replaced my modem with a Zoom, it's better but I still get disconnects.

Beware: Comcast has the gall to charge me for a service visit because of their modem firmware screw up.  They charged me $70 for two service visits that did NOT resolve the issue all because it was a personally owned modem.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

SB6120 here, same story as pretty much all the other posters. Mine started in April, around the time that they provided a speed increase to everyone (I'm in Charleston, SC area).

I figured it was a firmware issue but I don't think so anymore. I think it's the fact that the SB612X models aren't very good with marginal quality signals and Comcast did something to degrade their signal when increasing the speeds.

My modem was rock solid for a year or two before having this problem. When this first started happening, I went down to Comcast and rented a modem from them (not sure which kind) but after a bit, it too started happening.

After reading this thread and understanding SNR, power levels (down/up), etc., I'm hoping to finally fix the problem by possibly moving the modem to another outlet that might have less splitters. I've replaced pretty much every splitter and tried different coax if it even remotely looked suspect and the numbers I'm posting here are as good as they're going to get without removing splitters.

Model Name: SB6120
Vendor Name: Motorola
Firmware Name: SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.6-SCM00-NOSH
Boot Version: PSPU-Boot 1.0.0.4m1
Hardware Version: 3.0
Serial Number: 317001006302241205040011
Firmware Build Time: Apr 17 2012 15:09:37

Downstream SNR of 36,35,36,37
Downstream PowerLevel of 1,0,2,2

Two Upstream Channels bonded, showing power levels of 50, with one showing T4 TimeOut for the Ranging status.

I tried removing one of the splitters and saw my Upstream power levels go to 46. Unfortunately this removes the TV signal so I'll need to figure out how to remove this splitter and still get tv signals everywhere.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Well that lasted all of about 30 minutes. Soon after I posted, the modem went offline. When I went to the signal page, the Upstream power level showed 57dBmV. So it seems like what others are saying is true, the upstream power level is what is causing the modem to lose signal.

So now the question is, why does the power level spike? Right now, it's at 51 (and I'm back on). The weird thing is, for me to reconnect, all I usually do is either power cycle the modem (that works maybe 50% of the time) OR I disconnect and reconnect the coax to the splitter (I don't remove the splitter, just twist the coax off and then back on) OR a combination of the two. Anyone have any theories as to why doing something this simple would actually cause the power level to change (i.e. it was at 50, it went to 57 and I was disconnected, i disconnected/reconnected the coax, and it went back to 51)?

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

I think if it's already marginal, it suddenly can't talk, so starts increasing the signal in an attempt to be heard. In multi-channel mode, it can't really go too high (although 2-channel goes to 54.) Basically, when it is offline, the signals you see are generally garbage as it's in seek mode.

andyross: Ok, that make sense. The modem is boosting the signal to compensate for the sh*tty signal. So what part of the signal is marginal? The downstream signal? Or the upstream signal? Or the signal in general? Is there something I can look for to possibly diagnose and see whether it's something I can fix (replace/reduce splitters, replace coax, shorten distance from box outside house to the modem) or whether it's something on Comcast's end?

Basically, there is a somewhat constant 'background' communication between the modem and the CMTS. The modem will send a little 'how is the signal' type command every once in awhile, and expects a response. If it doesn't get a response, it may try a few times, then try adjusting the transmit signal strength in case it needs to speak louder. Eventually, it may give up and give the T4 error.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

So would the SB6120 be having the same problems since the firmware for that is also the SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.6-SCM00-NOSH?  If so then this is what seems to be causing all the upstream noise problems that lead to high latency spike.  Several threads have been created complaining about these problems, which started around mid-August and coincides with when the firmware was pushed to our modems.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

FWIW, "firmware" doesn't cause noise ingress issues, it just *MAY* result in certain particular modems to be more or less tolerable of them.

Maybe. No guarantees. YMMV. FWIW, I was a Motorola man for many years, but I love my Zoom 5341"J" ! It's been a bulletproof performer so far ! Haven't seen any firmware related issue here or at other forums.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Well Comcast came out yesterday and ran new copper from the box outside to the splitter on the property.  It has been 24hrs and I have not received any DHCP RENEW WARNING errors, No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out errors, and no loss of signal (that I see in the logs at least).  Online gaming has resulted in a much more pleasent experience with steady connection to the servers.  Before I raise the touchdown signal I am going to wait until Friday evening when I have always had a modem restart since August.  As it stands now though my connection has improved since yesterday.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Two things:

1.  Bought a Zoom 5341 at Staples.  Wouldn't sync despite 2 hrs on phone w tech, resets, etc.  see my signals from Moto before -- it couldn't be that bad.

2. Gave up.  Leased Arris modem.  Connected in moments and no probs in 5 days, save fwoman overloaded node upstream of me that Comcast may have load balanced.

I hate not owning my own equipment.  But pouring time down the drain was worse.  Good luck, gang.

P.s.,anyone want to buy a slightly used Moto Surfboard Smiley Happy

You have a signal issue. the upstream and the downstream power levels are both too high and out of balance with respect to each other. You should have a tech out to properly balance your line.

I just wanted to update...

My issue appears to now be resolved (knock on wood).  My System Up Time is 8 days 3h:48m:31s now.  I don't know what transpired after the techs came out and contacted their supervisor, however it appears to have been favorable.   I am just thankful it's fixed.  Good luck to all out there still experiencing this issue.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

My SB6121 has been fine ever since I purchased it in May. However in the past week I have had about 10 T4 timeouts and subsequent modem reboots. I started monitoring my signal levels with a script that takes a screen snapshot every 2 minutes. I see no significant change in the signal levels either before or after the T4 timeout. My system is excellent most of the time with good ping levels, speed, and overall response time. The modem outages are only a few minutes. One thing that makes me wonder what is really going on is that during the brief outage my Comcast HDTV freezes. No pixelation or tiling , just a frozen picture. The TV recovers faster than the modem. Here are my modem stats :

Update - just had another outage with similar symptoms. After I got back online I checked my Comcast account and it said there was a service interrruption in my area. When I called Comcast I also got a recorded message saying the same thing. I also recall last week seeing the same message about a service interruption in my area. After tonights outage I called a second time and all they wanted to do was send out a tech. If its a system problem why roll a truck ? The CSR didnt even seem to know about any system outages. Yikes Smiley Wink

FYI - I am in the Reading, PA area in case anyone else has similar issues

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Hi everyone.

My modem has been dropping connection and it has picked up in the past few days timing out multiple times.

I seem to have only 1 upstream channel right now.  Also the power level is reading at 57 for upstream.  Does this seem to be more of a signal/cable issue or modem issue?

Yes. The upstream power is far out of spec.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Does anyone know if MOCA adapters would cause signal interference/issues with the cable modem? I've had them for years without issue. Of course I took them off because if a Comcast tech sees *anything* that can be used to place blame, then they will. Once I removed them, the signal has been up for a couple of hours and the tech came out and said "everything looks good."

My modem still shows my upstream power levels at 51 (2 channels). My downstream power levels are 0,0,0,1 with SNRs of 36,35,36, and 37. None of this looks any different than before the tech and before I took off the MOCA adapters.

In my numerous self troubleshooting attempts I removed the moca adapters and still saw issues so I put them back on. But that was all before I found this forum and thread.

MoCA should not interfere with cable TV or cable Internet. Mine never did. I even had a Comcast technician in the house one time troubleshooting my Internet, and they didn't bother him (but he was a bit wondrous about how they were connected).

Which MoCA boxes do you have? I have it on good authority that the Netgear boxes are "frequency agile" and will actively avoid interfering with any signals they see. I suspect other brands work the same way, out of necessity.

Anybody else get a firmware update today?  Mine updated around 1PM.  Can't say anything for the stability yet, although my connection (before the update) seems to be pretty stable and has been very fast - much faster than what I pay for.  Almost like they're making up for all of the problems!  Here's my firmware info:

Ohhh... I really hope 1068 fixes my upstream speed issues that started with 1066. Will see if it is available this evening.

no update here. I came to check out similar problems. For the past two weeks, I've been getting "minutes" of no connection. Wait it out and it's back. SB6120. About 6 weeks ago, I set up a new router so was wondering about it. Several times a year (for YEARS) we go through intermittent service that can last up to 6 weeks. We don't even try to get it fixed as earlier attempts were fruitless and waiting seemed to be the key. I don't really have upstream bonding yet.

Does anyone know if MOCA adapters would cause signal interference/issues with the cable modem? I've had them for years without issue. Of course I took them off because if a Comcast tech sees *anything* that can be used to place blame, then they will.

I have the ActionTec MOCA adapters. About six hours after the technician left, and with the MOCA adapters still disconnected, I started encountering the issue again. So, as expected, the MOCA adapters weren't/aren't the issue.

My next step is to replace two of my splitters with Tap splitters. I'm hoping to still have enough signal for the TVs.

What area of the country are you in. I came home today and the wife told me that the internet had been up all day. I had seen this post while at work so I was excited and thought that my modem too had been upgraded and that this was the reason for no more failures. Unfortunately I think I've just been lucky as my modem still has the April 17 firmware.

It sure would be nice if Comcast would post a rollout schedule or something like that.

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

I received an email from ComcastSteve today telling me about the firmware update, and I see that the new firmware has been up and running on my SB6121 for just over 4 hours now.

I was also getting frequent, recurrent T3/T4 timeouts, but in my case, it turns out there was an issue with a power amplifier in my neighborhood.  After escalating the issue a bit, the problem was finally identified by a
Comcast tech (a big thank-you to Matthew Layton), and Comcast replaced the malfunctioning amplifier.  After the replacement last week, my upstream power-levels dropped from a previous 47 dBmV down to a stable 38 dBmV and I haven't had any problems since.

The funny thing - and this is probably why they didn't immediately discern any issues with my modem - is that an upstream power level of 47 is considered to be in-spec (from what I can tell here).  But I was told that the malfunctioning amplifier was causing other modems in my neighborhood to go out of spec and this was somehow causing the T3/T4 timeouts I was experiencing.

I don't see any change in my upstream power levels since the firmware update (still stable at 38 dBmV), but I do see a slight improvement in my downstream signal levels (-7 to -4 for power and 34 to 36 for SNR).  I wonder if the previous firmware was making my modem more susceptible to issues arising from the bad amplifier.  Perhaps the firmware update would have eliminated my T3/T4 timeouts - and possibly masked the issues associated with the bad amplifier - but I'll never really know for sure.

Anyway, I just wanted to give everyone here a status update on my specific problem.

I found that Comcast will work hard to fix your issue if you've collected the relevant data demonstrating you have a genuine problem, and you're doggedly persistent - but paitent and pleasant - when dealing with tech support.

Thanks Comcast!

Re: Having issues with your Motorola SB6121? Please post here.

Have had some disconnect issues with the modem. But today I had a dramatic loss of download speed from a typical 20mbps to a dismal .50mbps. Not even 1 mbps! Chat helped by resetting modem and resending config info but it did not help. They will send out tech within 24 hrs to check? Before these issues speed was not a problem but we did notice several times internet dropping through router. We have assumed it was a router issue because that model a Netgear WNDR3800 has been giving other users issues on the Netgear forum. I guess now I can add the Motorola Modem to that list of issues. In all fairness I still had a older modem that when I hooked up gave similar results to the SB6121 so I doubt my issue with speed is a modem one.

If I have hsi service, I don't seem to go that low--at least I haven't been able to take a speedtest at those times when it seems I have momentary (3 minutes) lack of service. However, I am getting results like this every few days during morning hours when, presumably, there is not so much demand in my area:

test.png

When I normally get:

test2.png

or higher depending on the server it's sent to.

Same here, Jsascott. Woke up this morning to less than 1mbps. They sent a tech out already and he was stumped Smiley Sad  What we found was if we ran the Xfinity speed test, we had the horrible speeds from servers in the east, (Boston, Pittsburg, Detroit, etc.) However, when we ran the test through a server in the wes, (Seattle, LA, Houston, etc) Those were normal, 38mbps. In my case, the upload speed is fine and stable around 5mbps no matter what. I am HOPING this gets figured out soon. Also, when I bypass the router and direct connect, I get 0 internet, nothing connects at all. I have the Blast service, with the UBee 3.0 modem.

FWIW, you need to properly powercycle/reset the modem each and every time that you change the device that is being directly connected to it. To powercycle a regular modem, unplug it from the A.C. power source for about thirty seconds.

If it is a telephony type (CDV) modem with a built in backup battery, the recessed reset button on the rear must be used rather than just unplugging it from the power outlet in order to properly power cycle it. You'll need something like a bent paper clip or a pen tip. Depress and hold in the recessed reset button on the rear until you see the front panel indicator lights begin to cycle, then release. Now give the eMTA the time it needs to re-sync.

On another site, there is a post of the updates in the 1.0.6.8 firmware. The most important seems to be how it handles issues with upstream. Currently, if it gets a RANGE-ABORT signal on one of the upstream channels, it reboots. With the new firmware, it will drop to partial mode.

This is what I'm getting now--but I am getting service:

speed.png

Shaper Probe gave me about the same results. I'm the only one in my house using the internet right now. No red flags on my signals/power levels. Just what I'm used to happening three or four times a year. If it's still like this in a few weeks, we may call service to have our outside connections checked.

Running the 1.0.6.8 firmware for two days now.  So far so good.  The logs indicate there has been some timeouts/reboots but not once when I've been online and they're much more rare then before.  By far the longest I've gone in 3 months without a reboot.  Think this one may be a winner.  Assuming they'll start pushing it out wider soon.

Still no update here in NJ. Any of you know how to force it? I rebooted my modem but it didn't trigger the update.

No, you can't force it. It's in limited release for testing. When it's ready, it will be pushed automatically.
