DOCSIS 3.0?

DOCSIS 3.0?

When shopping for a new cable modem, is it pointless to look at DOCSIS 3.0 modems? Are they still accepted?

Currently have a SB6183, rated at 683mbps but limited by Xfinity to only  get to 300mbps.

Netgear CM600 has come down in price and rated at 960mbps, 959 by Xfinity. But only a DOCSIS 3.0.

Thank you.

Re: DOCSIS 3.0?

As long as the modem is in the official support list it will work just fine at the rated speeds. http://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/

If you need faster than the ~900 Mbit, you're likely looking for Fios anyway.

Yes. They are still supported as long as they are on the list;

Which speedtier are you currently subscribed to ?

You'd never get gigabit speeds with a DOCSIS 3.0 device.

Re: DOCSIS 3.0?

I currently have 300download/20upload. I have been offered 600download a couple of times which led to several conversations with multiple Xfinity team members. About 6 different people. 3 said my equipment could handle the speed. 3 said it couldn't.

Speaking to Arris tech support, the SB6183 could handle the speed. Thought when I bought it a year ago, I'd be set for a little while.

In reference to the DOCSIS 3.0 vs 3.1, one of the Xfinity reps said that they were moving away from 3.0 and no modem with 3.0 could handle the higher speeds. Said I needed to get a 3.1 if I wanted to see any improvements and the costs were just to high.

I just stumbled across the Netgear CM600 & 700, both listed with Xfinity, both rated at over 900mbps, but are only 3.0.

Just didn't know if I got one of those, if I was just buying something that was only going to be good enough for a few months.

You'll be good for a long while with either as long as you don't upgrade to the gig speed tier.
