Connection slows to 1Mbps at night and early morning

Mid last week, I noticed our internet was slowing to a complete crawl at night. It was dropping below 1 Mbps using both Speedtest.net and speedtest.xfinity.com. Previously I had been getting between 130 and 170 Mbps on my Blast 150 plan. I called tech support who had me run through all the usual things and decided a tech needed to visit after looking at my signal levels. The tech support rep did suggest I get a newer modem so I purchased and activated an Arris SB6190. The new modem did not change anything.

The tech came during the day when speeds where better (still not previous levels, but around 100 Mbps) and replaced some connectors outside, replaced some connectors in the attic, and added a ground outside. As you may imagine, that night it slowed to a completely unusable speed. Before the tech arrived at my house, I noticed another tech at a nearby neighbors house. I spoke to the neighbors tonight and they are having the same issue and it continues for them as well.

I logged into the modem status page when the issue is happening early this morning and am seeing what I think is a low SNR level, too high downlink power, and a lot of errors. Below is what I captured early this morning when I was getting 1.2 Mbps.

 

Any ideas of how to get past the low level tech and get someone out to check the lines in the neighborhood?

The SNR is out of spec (low) on all channels, the error counts are very high, and the error log indicates communication problems. These are all most likely due to a poor connection between your equipment and Comcast's network.


Check to see if Comcast is reporting an outage for your area (see https://www.xfinity.com/support/cable-tv/outages-in-your-area/).

If no outage is reported and you want to troubleshoot this yourself, please see Connection Troubleshooting Tips.

If you can't find the problem or you'd rather have Comcast do the troubleshooting, call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast, or chat with them using the Internet Support option at https://support.xfinity.com/chat. If they can't fix the problem remotely, insist they send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.

If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit. If the trouble is due to anything outside your home, you shouldn't be charged.

Thank you. I have talked to tech support, run through troubleshooting steps, had a technician come out, had some outside connectors replaced, a ground added, and other items, but am still having problems. What are next steps? Calling back to tech support results in me going through the same troubleshooting steps as before and is terribly inconvenient since the issue happens late at night and I do have to go to work. It seems multiple houses on my street are experiencing the same problem which leads me to think it is something between my house and the plant . How do I get that investigated?

Since you've already tried replacing the modem to no effect, and if you've already checked all your cables/connectors/splitters/amps, there's really nothing more you can do except keep leaning on them until they fix the problem. The SNRs continue to be way too low and the error counts way too high.

So I got a hold of someone who seemed to know what they were talking about first thing this morning while the connection was almost completely down. He looked and confirmed it was something effecting the whole neighborhood and put in a ticket to maintenance. A tech still showed up to my house right at 8 as I was leaving for work. He too confirmed an issue that Maintenance had to work on. I get home this evening to the below and speeds peaking at around 24 Mbps but fluctuating wildly. I called back and was told they had to send another tech to the house to confirm it's a Maintenance issue to be able to open another ticket. The fun continues.

you are not alone for the past 3 weeks ive been having the same exact issue around 6pm every night, my internet is unsuable at this time, ive had 1 tech come out and im getting another come this saturday. Only thing they did for me so far is credit my account with 10 whole dollars for my "problems". i'm beyond frustrated if there is no fix this next visit i am changing providers, it's more so of an issue for me working from home on the computer and these are my prime time hours i need to be able to be online.

Well, it's completely out this morning. Only 12 of 32 channels able to lock, SNR levels all below 30, and lots of errors in the modem logs. I know I said at night, but I am starting to think this is an outside temp thing. The colder it gets the worse my signal is.

I am now confident that my internet is scared of the dark. Sun goes down and so does my internet connection. It's 11:15 AM now and nice and sunny outside and I am getting the best speeds I have seen since this started a week ago. 125 Mbps. Still not the 140-170 I was getting, but much better. Of course, the tech will be here between 3 and 5 so probably won't be a problem at that time. Maybe he'll be an hour late.

Just an update. Still experiencing problems. Seems to be relaed to temperature. The colder it gets the worse it is. Tech came out Wednesday and verified there was a problem on the street that another team would have to come out and address. He did run a new temp wire to my house to ensure someone would come out. Right now, speeds are about 60 Mbps down. We'll see what happens over the next few days.

Another update. Temps dropped below freezing last night and internet slowed until it completely stopped. Checked modem status and had lock on 8 of 32 channels. Very low SNR and lots of errors in the status log. Same stuff I have beel dealing with for the last 12 days.

On the bright side, the Xfinity My Account app now has a note from Comcast that scheduled maintenance will be performed in my area soon that could cause service interruptions.

I have changed tactics in trying to get this resolved, I am no longer calling to complain that the internet is slow or out, I am now calling and asking when it will be fixed. I am hoping that will make them read the previous notes and see that this has been going on for a while and that the techs have repeatedly stated it's something in the "plant".

Another update. It's been a few days of warm weather (above 50 degrees). Internet speeds are anywhere from 70 Mbps to 170 Mbps. Seem to be at aor around the 70-80 range most of the time. I am tired of calling Comcast to run through the same steps, have more techs sent out, etc. Validated with neighbors they are still having issues too. How many techs do they have to send to my street before someone gets out some test equipment and finds the problem in the plant? Seems like a gigantic waste of money to keep rolling trucks like that.

It's supposed to be below freezing again early next week. I fully expect I will watch my speeds drop to a complete loss of connection at that time.

Day 21: Temps are in the 40's this morning and my speeds are below 10Mbps again. 1 error in the event log. Something about a RCS Partial Service. I guess 1/10 or less of my paid plan speed is acceptable in Comcast eyes.
Any suggestions from the community on ways to get this escalated?

I'm going to escalate your issue to the Comcast corporate employees that are available to these boards. They will be able to poll the CMTS to see whether or not everything is in the green zone, see your node / cable plant and modem health, and also see a history plot for the modem. You should get a reply here in your topic. Good luck !

Final update, this issue appears to be resolved now. Comcast replaced a line going under the street near my house and, I believe, did some other work in the area. It's well below freezing now and my speeds are topping out above 150Mbps. No uncorrectables and no errors in Event Log.
I haven't gotten response yet from neighbors on street to see if their issues are also resolved. I looked at the line under the street Comcast replaced and it, along with others going to neighbors houses, was really old and and felt brittle.
I will update this if the problem returns, but for now, I'm calling it fixed.
