You won't be able to use the modem portion of it. You may be able to use the router portion with a cable modem but I'm not certain that the router portion is able to be separated.

For internet NO as far as using the gateway as a router i doubt that to because dsl uses ppoe and comcast uses dhcp.

The PPPoE protocol doesn't matter to the router component if it can be used separately.

True but would they even implement dhcp in a stand alone dsl gateway router? I mean you know these providers wont spend a penny more then they need to. Interesting though does comcast gateways have settings for PPPoe ?

Check out the tech specs. The router portion has a built in DHCP server to hand out IP addys to the network clients.

I've seen some recent Netgear DSL gateway's that are advertised to be either / or a DSL gateway or a wi-fi router, but never a 2-wire branded AT&T gateway, and I've handled many 2-wire gateways over the years.

The Netgear ones are advertised as "Ethernet WAN" future-proof your network.

Yes you are correct maybe its possible it could work as a router with cable HSI. Would be interesting to see..  : )

Thanks for that info Jay. Upon further reading, I didn't see anything in the spec sheet to indicate that this device is able to be used separated as a router.

We have to be careful about what is being said here. If the AT&T DSL Gateway has a connector to plug in the DSL line, it *probably* doesn't have an ethernet port split off from the LAN side of the switch, into which you could connect the output from a cable modem. The only place you could potentially connect the ethernet cable from a cable modem is into one of the LAN switch ports. This would make the device act as a switch on the network, not a router. In order for the device to act as a router, by definition, you have to have interfaces in two seperate network segments (ie Internet and LAN segments). This type of device  might be able to serve as a Wifi access point and as a network switch, but probably not as a router or gateway for a cable modem.
