XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

When I pause internet to a macbook pro, while all other sites are blocked, google related sites are not. I can go to google.com, run a search, click on videos and view youtube videos. I can login to gmail and chat on hangouts. Since these are the two main activities I am trying to block, this feature is kind of useless.....anyone else has success blocking google when interner is paused on a device?

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

It blocks google and youtube on my iPhone 6s when I pause it and my Windows PC, and Linux CentOS 7 and Linux Mint 18.1. It has to do with https protocol. When you end up using http you get paused screen and with https you get a connection error. Did you try clearing history and cache?

Same issue. Sometimes it pauses and sometimes it doesn't. Both when xFi app shows the device is paused.

Apologies for the delayed response. I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing issues with the Pause feature in xFi. Pausing a device will block internet access when the device is connected to the home network. In progress activity (ex. online streaming) may not stop immediately.
Additionally, pausing devices does not block access to the xfinitywifi hotspots and/or cellular networks.

Can you verify that the device you are trying to pause is not defaulting to the "xfinitywifi" hotspot?

If it appears that your paused device is connected to your home network wifi and still accessing the internet, please let me know and I can escalate this issue to the proper team for resolution.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

Any update on the google issue. I just found out that my kids Dell laptop has been allowing access to google even when I had them paused using the bedtime mode. Very frustrating because I trusted the XFi as a parental control tool.

Hi Boeing_driver, is Google the only website the device has access to while in Bedtime Mode or do they have full internet access?

So far we found out that he can open google and use it as if the device was unrestricted. He can get pictures, videos, and anything else as long as google or YouTube is the portal address. Nothing else opens up. We tried all kind of web addresses and all showed the appropriate xFi blocking response.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

Boeing_driver, can you make sure the web browsers being using for YouTube and Google are completely shut down, and then try testing this again? Pausing a device, or appying Bedtime Mode, may not immediately stop web browsing activities that are already in place (ex, an in progress video that has been fully loaded), but it should stop subsequent searches.

If you can, please send me a private message with the MAC address for that PC. To locate this, you can select the Device in xFia and view Device Details. Thanks!

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I'm having the same issue.  xFi does not block youtube or google on multiple devices on my network, eventhough they are in sleep mode.  Is there a solution to this problem?

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

Same problem on a Chromebook. If chrome remains open, can still play other YouTube videos (ie, not videos that had already been streaming) after the device is paused on xFi. Please help - I finally thought I’d found a solution to the tidal wave of technology I’m trying to overcome as a parent, so am hoping you can help.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I can confirm this issue as well.

I spent 2 hrs with CHat Support and the Wireless Routers.

I set the Xfinity Router Parental Controls to block both https://www.youtube.com and http://www.youtube.com.

It does not block youtube.

In testiing it further, it does block www.cbs.com and www.espn.com, because the sites onluy speak from a HTTP protocol.  I noticed that google and youtube speak on a HTTPS protocol.  THe router DOES NOT block those sites with HTTPS protocol?

If you type in a search in your browser, it will search http://www.google.com, and it would block that.  But if you go directly to google, it replaces it with https://www.google.com, and as everyone has said here... the traffic goes through.

I have tested this on 2 computers with the same results, using different browsers.  The Wireless team logged into my router and confirmed it was setup properly and thought something had to be done within Xfintiy, not our configuration.  However, as I called Security Assurance Team, they are not aware of what they can do.

Does this help provide more information?

I found this thread 2 months after the last post with no ultimate solution. Looks like Comcast has lost interest.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I have this same problem - I am trying to turn off wifi during the day to keep my kid offline when they aren't at school. If I stop the wifi and they reboot their computer (which is only on the home network) they have access to youtube and google but no other sites.  That allows them to cheat and be on the computer all day.  I really think this is a comcast problem.

Hello All - Per ComcastBrittany's message, we would need anyone having this issue to please send us a PM with your account information and MAC address for the PC. Please do so and we will be able to look at this further.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I have the same problem. However, I noticed it only happens in Chrome browser on my Windows 10 laptop to YouTube and many Google’s services. It blocks other sites in Chrome. It blocks Google sites in Firefox and Edge. It blocks Google sites on the iPhone. There’s something special when Chrome access Google’s services. I also made sure I’m not connecting through xifinitywifi.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

We have the same issue with both Chromebooks and Ipads - neither blocking the device with parental controls, nor blocking the sites will stop access to youtube.

Why is this not getting addressed? Surely this is one of the main things parents want from parental controls?

I have the same issue. The xFi app works great EXCEPT for google and YouTube - practically the only things my son cares about. Has there been a solution suggested for this yet?

How do we private message? Do we direct this to an email account? Which one?

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I have the same issue. Bedtime mode and pause does not block youtube/google search/gmail/google maps. I have tested that with Chrome browser on my MBP and my phone oneplus 5. Other websites are blocked as expected.

I am sure it is a bug in your service. Please fix that as soon as possible otherwise parent control/pause/bedtime mode is almost useless. If there is no easy fix, please give us a workaround to block youtube/google services at router level.

same issues here. I have contacted xfinity customer services many times and tried different methods from them, still not working. Really frustrated. It looks like xfinity didn't have a solution either.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

I don't think this is an Xfinity issue, I've seen this with multiple providers.  It's generally and issue with HTTPS and the fact that Google/Youtube uses multiple domains for accessing videos.  If you are on youtube.com and look at where the video comes from it's often from a googlevideo domain.  In the past I've had better luck setting up Firewall blocks for youtube and googlevideo, but even that isn't 100% effective.

I do wish Google/Youtube would make it easier for parents.  Youtube is addictive and during certain hours I want just youtube blocked, but unless you get an advanced firewall that understands you are trying to block all iterations of youtube, it can be difficult.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

This is an issue not just when trying to block individual websites, which would make sense if the sites route information through other servers, but that the parental controls ought to lock the device from all sites.  That a supposed blocked device can still access any information suggests a serious issue, but it also is a problem that Xfinity creates the impressions that parents can rely on parental controls with no indication restrictions may be ineffective for youtube.

And we are still being asked to message individual customer service people with more details, but there is no option to send direct messages to those people.

Re: XFinity xFi not blocking google or youtube

Yeah it true if the Parental Controls were setup to block a site and all apps that use that site (eg. apps on iphone or android) then it should do that.  It's weird with Xfinity because the Parental Controls available on internet.xfinity.com basically just do safe search and block porn sites, with no customizations.  Then they have the Parental Controls in the modem/router itself.  They call that tab Parental Controls but it's really not.  It's just ACLs (access control lists).  Dealing with ACLs on a regular basis I can tell you those are not complex enough to be Parental Controls.  They aren't even Web Filters.

Anyway I"m just rambling, but one thing that sort of works is adding the youtube key word in the parental control tab in the modem/router/firewall.  Just "youtube" by itself.  Sadly this blocked youtube from every device in my house including those labled as "Trusted Devices".  Oh well.

I'm so glad others are having this issue and it's not just me. My wife is *divorce level ticked* at me for not being able to fix this problem. She doesn't get why "an IT person can't fix an IT probelm."

If you have the X1 system, you can block Youtube.
