XFi block all new devices

XFi block all new devices

I want to block any and all new devices from connecting to my home network unless I approve. I used to be able to do this through various router settings, but I can’t find an equivalent in XFi. Thanks.

I am curious too.

Thanks,

Re: XFi block all new devices

@hsciii@DRMan - this is currently not a feature within xFi. For devices that do successfully connect, you can pause them as soon as they join. Placing them on an indefinite pause will block the device from using your home network until you unpause the device.

If you wish to prevent unwanted devices from connecting to your home network completely, ensure your network is password protected and keep access to the password limited.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

No I'm sorry this is a unavailable option for Xfinity Period. This is just another example of you screwing your customers. You are truly the EVIL EMPIRE

djm19761, Thanks for your feedback. As Brittany said above, you can pause the devices that join your network that you do not want there.

Re: XFi block all new devices

This last suggestion is completely unacceptable. In today’s world, to keep secure your assets, it takes a 100% assurance that nothing gets in your infrastructure until it is properly approved.
I would be expecting that you would provide a better response other than rely on a password...

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately because of your worthless Xfi or whatever app blocking anything is impossible now. Not even though the router. Thanks you brilliant tecs

Re: XFi block all new devices

Great question. I need an answer too. I’m in a constant battle with a teenager (no judgement plz) who circumvents bedtime mode and pausing by renaming his computer and changing mac id...restarting modem while plugging in ethernet cable. I get no text that a new device has joined. I need to be able to completely disable internet access at a given time or block all new devices.

Exact same issue with my 16 yr old son. This is very frustrating Comcast. The old system worked better. Fix this issue. I'm sure we are not the only customers with is issue.

Re: XFi block all new devices

You must not have the notifications on. Within 5 seconds of a device connecting my husband and me both gets texts and notifications from the xfi app

Re: XFi block all new devices

5 secs might be too late to keep your personal data and privacy secured...
I don’t think this topic is related as much as how we can manage our kids’ access but more so to unknown clients getting in our home private network without proper authorization.
If the app would have a setting to block any new access until further approval, via notification, that should address both use cases
And here - still waiting for XFINITY to respond...

Re: XFi block all new devices

Yes, that is how its supposed to work. Yes notifications and alerts are enabled. There are youtube vids on how to circumvent all of the parental controls. My kid is getting around my settings by first) change the computer name and/or mac id (they do this because the device has been paused under other names/ids), second) reboot router, third) while router is rebooting plug in ethernet cable. Voila, no notification of a new device. I only know it happens when I check the xfi app devices and see a new funky number for a device. I have not detected that he can get around wifi controls.

My best route to blocking all this is to remove the router from the house for a few days everytime I detect it has been done!!!

Do your children know your Xfinity userid and password?  If so, change the password.

Re: XFi block all new devices

No they don't know the password.  To get back to the original theme of the thread, alot of users would like the ability to block all new devices (default for a new device should be Paused).  Then the new device can be approved or rejected. I chimed in because my kid was able to add a device without me getting a text notification. If all new devices were initially Paused, then it wouldn't be an issue.

How do I pause devises as soon as they sign in as recommended by the reply?

The xFi app has that function.

Re: XFi block all new devices

The process to pause the new device, after being identified the new device by the router AND received a notification (I.e. email or txt) is:
1) access the XFi app
2) go to the “Devices” section
3) review the top notification that describes the exception event of the new device
4) select the device and add it to a people profile that has been paused
5) when the wizard is complete, confirm under the people profile that all included devices are in PAUSED status

The above is the process that I have to follow, but it is not perfect, but barely ok however not acceptable... it usually can take me 30-45secs to go thru these steps and that’s plenty of time to expose my network to any intrusion or non-authorized access.

Still waiting for Comcast/Xfinity to do something about it

Re: XFi block all new devices

This is exactly what I need as well. Google works great and my kids find out any new renaming / rebooting tricks as soon as they’re published. I need a way to simply restrict all unapproved devices from connecting to the network that I pay for. This would seem as important as keeping the device operational to me? Xfinity, this needs a permanent resolution!!!!

Re: XFi block all new devices

I agree, other routers have a setting that allow you to not allow any new devices to connect. In what world do the techs at Comcast live? The idea is to secure your network not get better at cleaning it up after something happens. C'mon Comcast get with it. We need this sooner better than later. Make it a priority. I too have a teenager playing the game of getting back on through another connection after I forget his device. No control here Comcast, step up your game.

Re: XFi block all new devices

Was wondering how you fixed the battle with your son renaming anf avoiding pause on xfi? I am dealing with the same issue. And hate to completely unplug Internet as he does this when we go to sleep at night until I wake up at 4am anf still hear him on his computer.

Re: XFi block all new devices

Thanks for asking. The battle was never really "won." He just learned that I was serious about  pulling the router from the house for a week and he quit doing it. He is also now old enough to toss out of the house :-)

This whole issue is an easy fix for xfinity, they just refuse to do it. Real tailorable parental controls and instead of new devices automatically being allowed they are automatically refused until approved. (Until kids find another work around).

Re: XFi block all new devices

Hi All thanks for your feedback here about the xFi app and parental controls. At this time you can establish a notification when a new device joins your network and can pause the device manually once it connects.

Re: XFi block all new devices

Understand, I have done that many times. But I often did not get a notification with ethernet connections. And getting notifications at 4 in the morning isn't much fun.

I would rather get a notification "Do you want to allow?" with the connection denied until I say yes rather than the current method.

That's a terrific idea. I'll send this to my leadership.

Re: XFi block all new devices

Block all new devices until I allow is a terrific idea because with iPhone as long as one iPhone has the WiFi passcode in it, you can hold your iPhone by another iPhone and share your internet connection. As far as your kids getting on as a new device on Xbox all you do is change your passcode to a combination of numbers and letters that they can’t figure out and put it in for them instead of giving them the code. I also have gamers and they figured out the whole new device thing so I changed my passcode to a combination of 16 numbers and letter like Comcast used to set it up as and when the kids want a device connected I do it for them. The iPhone feature of sharing the WiFi is what erks me because my 21year old feels the need to let everybody connect to our WiFi that comes to our house with an iPhone. It shouldn’t be as easy as holding one phone by another to get on someone’s WiFi

Re: XFi block all new devices

I know it defeats the purpose of having an xFi router, but you could get a router that has settings to block all new devices and run an Ethernet cable from your xfinity router to the new one. Once this is done change the xFi Passcode to something your child cannot guess and only give them the passcode to the new router. Or change the xFi passcode and do not give it out, if someone wants access put the passcode in for them. That’s what I do. Then as soon as I add whoever’s device I put it in there group and voila there shut down when I say so

Re: XFi block all new devices

Yes thanks. I agree with everything you said. But I don’t want to have to bridge mode my xfi router. I do have a separate router but its a simple unplug from my router, reboot xfi router, while rebooting plug computer ethernet cable to xfi router and no password needed and no notification. (Also requires the kid to rename his computer each time). I only know it happened when I look in device list and see new devices.
