Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

Don't have/never had xfi pods and over 6 hours on the phone with the advanced repair and gig departments has given me nothing. My 5ghz network is locked to 80mhz channel bandwidth and limiting my wifi speeds to way under 200 mbit. I just need to be able to set this back to 160mhz to restore full speed wifi connections to my devices. Splitting the 2.4ghz and 5ghz does nothing, I have tried setting them each to a different name and that doesn't help, the settings are all grayed out on the admin tool page. The xFi app does not have any place to set channel width.

Logging in to the local admin tool at 10.0.0.1 and going to the 5ghz settings page gives me snarky message at the top:

Wi-Fi Mode, Security Mode, Channel Selection, Channel Mode, and Channel Bandwidth are being managed automatically to help optimize your home Wi-Fi network and improve Wi-Fi coverage. To edit your Wi-Fi Network Name & Network password, please download the Xfinity xFi app or visit xfinity.com/myxfi.

Model:CGM4140COM
Vendor:Technicolor
Hardware Revision:2.2
eMTA & DOCSIS Software Version: Prod_18.1_d31 & Prod_18.1
Software Image Name: CGM4140COM_3.7p15s1_PROD_sey
Advanced Services: CGM4140COM

edit: Before anyone asks, factory resetting the gateway hasn't helped, and splitting the 2.4ghz from the 5ghz with a different name has also not helped.

same issue!! I tried chatting with someone today and after 3 Transfers! Still no one knew how!!

There is gotta be a switch or toggle that tells us "I want to manage my router and not the application! this is frustrating!!

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

I'm having the same issue here not being able to change the wifi channels or channel bandwith whether I'm using 2.4ghz or 5.0ghz.  I can't pinpoint it but Xfinity must have pushed out this script/update about a month or so.  I went back to my previous billing invoices and can't find any information that states Xfinity was going to lock down the ability to change wifi channels or channel bandwith.  I have close neighbors on both sides and I need the ability to make changes to my wifi as needed without the assistance of Xfinity.  I'm not using Xfinity xFi Pods/Wifi Extenders so I don't understand.  As an Xfinity paying customer, I should have the ability to choose if I need assistance or not.  Not very happy.

Same issue here -- THis needs to change. I had it set the way I needed it for MY house. Now my incredibly expensive wireless headset has terrible interference because this thing is broadcasting at too high a channel for devices taht don't even *need it*.

This nneds to change. IMMEDIATELY. I don't want or need this level of 'babysitting'. Give me back my control!

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

@RobertWy,  I appreciate your help/suggestion but in this situation, your link doesn't apply which I have seen in the past.  Even if I reset the modem, changed the SSID name, or have two separate SSID names for the 2.4ghz or 5.0 ghz, Xfinity took it apon themselves to lock down the wireless Wifi part so you can't change the bandwidth channel or bandwidth frequency.  When you try to do it through the local admin tool at 10.0.0.1, whether you're viewing the 2.4ghz or 5.0ghz, a message appears that states up at the top:

Wi-Fi Mode, Security Mode, Channel Selection, Channel Mode, and Channel Bandwidth are being managed automatically to help optimize your home Wi-Fi network and improve Wi-Fi coverage. To edit your Wi-Fi Network Name & Network password, please download the Xfinity xFi app or visit xfinity.com/myxfi.

If you try to change it through xFi app or Xfinity xFi website, you receive this message under advance settings:

ADVANCED SETTINGS

Why am I no longer able to view/change some advanced settings?

If you don't see the 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi settings (WiFi Mode, Channel Selection, and Channel Mode) in Advanced Settings, this means these settings are now being managed automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible. Additionally, if you have xFi Pods, you won't see your 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi networks listed separately. Pods require that you only have one WiFi network name and password, so that all of your devices can seamlessly connect to the network that will provide the best WiFi signal at any given time.

I am currently running a Xfinity XB6 modem without any Wifi extenders (xFi Pods).  The issue I see is that Xfinity took away the choice for the customer to decide what bandwidth channel and bandwidth frequency using 2.4ghz or 5.0ghz.  Xfinity pushed a patch update or script that grayed out the area so you can't change anything.  Xfinity wants to send a technician out but that's not going to do a bit of good because the technician is going to tell me what I already know and then Xfinity bills you a trip charge for the visit.  When I call three times for Xfinity Support on level Tier 1 and Tier 2, I even had them say the area is grayed out and when did this happen?

The customer should have the choice.

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

Good luck.  Comcast seems to have pulled the nuclear option and turned off this ability for everyone now.  It was hit or miss for the past two years.  They don't care.  The techs don't know what they are supporting (most don't know the basics of how wi-fi works), don't know how to fix it, and don't know why you would want to.  Comcast just stinks again.  But hey, they know your network situation better than you right?!

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

It seems I have the same problem as everyone here. I am locked out of the ability to choose the desired Channel on my WiFi. BOSE wireless equipment recommends all BOSE  wireless devices to be on the 2.4 Ghz and specifically, Channel 6. While I have everything in the house on the 2.4 GHz, I'm locked out of the ability to select Channel 6. Without all the devices being in unison, the various peripheral speakers are cutting in and out. I previously had the ability to select the Channel I wanted, but now, alike many others here that’s posted frustration here, I’m in the same pickle. I was told today, the Modem / Software automatically selects for you. Hopefully, someone in Xfinity / Comcast is reading this!?!?

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

Was having the same problem but i found a way to change it.  You can do it through  internet.xfinity.com  .  Took me a while to find it but there's a little button that says "edit wifi" as shown here: https://imgur.com/a/8LGJh2o

it'll launch a popup and the first thing you can do is check a box that says "use separate names".  It'll keep trying to stop you from doing this after you hit it.  At one point the "cancel" button will even be styled to look like a "continue" button just to get you to not do it.  But soldier on and it should work pretty much immediately.

The only thing it will let you change is the network name, and, for now, to have 2 separate names for 2.5 and 5.  I assume they will take that away in the next ccouple months, because that's what Comcast  engineers do, think they know better.  Anyway changing the names isn't the problem, it's controlling all the other ESSENTIAL wi-fi settings like: channel, type, and channel width.  No other router manufaturer forces this (mesh networks are admittedly a different beast) and this has been a standard ability since the beginnings of consumer wi-fi ( 802.11b).  It's absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary.

Re: Locked out of ability to set wifi channel bandwidth

Same problem here.  Xfinity techs have no idea how to fix this so don't waste your time.  Up until about a week ago, I was able to change my WiFi password and SSID daily because I have a psychotic neighbor and now, I can't change my credentials at all.  I have lost in-home functionality (SONOS) because of this as well.  This is a revenue opportunity for Comcast. "We'll send a tech out" is an easy way to make money without having to atually fix the problem.   I do feel a little better because I had thought my neighbor had locked me out.  FIX THIS COMCAST!!!

xFinity: I Want the Past 90+ Minutes of My Life Back!!

just got off the phone with xFinity's outsourced tech support and spent atleast 97 minutes on the phone with zero results.

it's simple, we all know how to use routers and clearly want the ability to use the router we pay for.  xFinity has blocked this service, mislead us with false information online on how to resolve the issue, and has ill prepared it's staff on how to handle this problem.

i began this quest when noticing a significant difference in speed via 2.4ghz vs 5ghz. since they've blocked me, and no one on their end can resolve this issue, i've created two different network names for each bandwidth to test my theory.

my cellphone is a constant 100-120Mbps+ via 5ghz (laptop does not support 5ghz). my laptop is a constant 30-39ishMbps via 2.4ghz whereas the cellphone will vary between 45-75Mbps on this bandwidth only.

i'm simply trying to get what i pay for, without having to pay extra. i've just spent 97 minutes with (2) different sets of reps only to have another call me back 10 minutes later to waste 15 more minutes and reassure me they know not how to resolve this.

there's a ton of networks near me when using xFinity spectrum analyzer and over 2/3rds of them are on 2.4ghz. not sure if this is causing an issue with my speed.

it's one thing when you have reps on the phone who aren't prepared to answer questions effeciently, it's a whole other when the online resources available will intentionally mislead you and waste your time.
