Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

There was a lengthy thread about this that seems to be locked as I am unable to comment on it.

I recently switched over to Xfinity Mobile from ATT and was surprised to see 150ms latency times on the LTE network.  I did a quick Google search which brought me to the thread mentioned above, to which I can not reply.  The thread noted that the Xfinity Mobile SLA was to provide latency times below 100ms, which is not being achieved and it seems no progress has been made on this end as the last post on the above thread was from January, yet here I am in March still getting very high latencies.

What is going on with this and why is the original thread locked?

Hello kyleMi, I can address your latency issues. Can you please provide me more information, like what kind of device you're using? The original thread was more than likely locked due to a resolution being found for the problem, you may want o reboot your equipment and run another test to confirm this on your end.

Re: Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

Hi - I am using a brand new unlocked iPhone X.

I'm not sure any resolution was ever reached regarding the latency issues as none of the posters in the original thread posted to indicate their issue had been resolved.  Having read through the thread, there was also no indication that anything was fixed.  Latency is still outside of Xfinity Mobile's own SLA of 100 ms.

kyleMi,

If I remember the thread at all, I believe it was locked due to the timing of the last response. The purpose of the forums is to keep active conversations available for customers to find resolution to issue. If a thread dies out, it is closed and another one can be opened.

I reached out to XFINITY Mobile support for a customer back in November who had the same concerns you have. This is what the XFINITY Mobile specialist had to say:

"the latency, signal strength, and ability to make a call all depends on where you are, some places that have lte does not fully mean that you will get low latency due to how signal strength works, just like if you were to be farther away from a wifi source, you will get more latency than you would being right next to it, even if they have lte, they should also see if there are any apps running in the background that could also cause the high latency. in general, there are too many factors in what would cause high latency."

Re: Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

High latency has been my #1 complaint with Xfinity Mobile since I signed up in September.

I think it's pretty well documented that this is a network issue related to the APN that Verizon assigns to Xfinity. Sure, there are other factors that can increase latency, but the fact is that Xfinity latency is always high even under ideal conditions, particularly for those of us on the West Coast. The APN causes all of my traffic to be routed through Chicago, when I am in Seattle. I typically see latencies of ~180ms, the fastest are ~120ms, and I commonly see 300+ms. All of these are really poor numbers for LTE, and they don't meet the published 100ms spec. Verizon customers typically see 30-50ms numbers.

Here's the original thread, which was split into two parts.

Almighty188 has a detailed description of the problem near the end of the second part:
https://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Xfinity-Mobile/Re-XFinity-Mobile-data-network-latency-not-within-publi...

To resolve this, I think it will require Xfinity to put pressure on Verizon to provide a better APN routing. But I think Verizon intentionally does this to differentiate between its high-cost service and low-cost MVNOs like Xfinity.

I can concur that the latency issue is also bad on the East Coast. Yesterday I activated new line on Xfinity Mobile in Harrisburg, PA. I did several speed test around the area. Here is an example of the speed test done on iPhone 6S. IMG_1703.PNG

Re: Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

Where we are with this issue, the statement about hardware and distance to a tower is a BS response.  I have my XM phone sitting here next to my Verizon phone as well as I have travelled with both my VZW phone will reliably report a <40ms latency why XM is always >100ms.  Please honor your own SLA or we will all be forced to file FCC complaints.

I challenge an XM rep to show a screen shot from the SpeedTest App from any XM device on the XM network(not wifi) with a latency below 100ms

I filed my FCC complaint a couple months ago and it didn't do much for it.  Some special XM people called me, pretended to fix the latency issue, gave me the "too far from the tower" run around, then filed my FCC complaint as "resolved."  Most mentions of "FCC complaint" on this forum will also be removed without notice, so watch out!  And good luck.

Re: Xfinity Mobile Latency Issues?

Well I get 50+mbs from my house on both, but my latency is horrid, "too far from tower" doesn't fly
