I currently have AT&T service. I am considering switching to xfinity and buying a new iphone x. So, two questions. First, if I buy the phone from xfinity, will it be unlocked? Secondly, if I decide xfinity service does not work as well as at&t for me, will I be able to use the xfinity iphone x with at&t service without problems/issues?
The first part I know for sure, the phone from XM wil be locked to XM. I believe from what I have read I phones SE and above are both GSM & CDMA. Not positive though.
Hi linmy, your IPhone will come unlocked the only stipulation is the phone must be paid in full. For instructions on unlocking your phone please click on this link. Your Device from At&T may not be compatible depending on what type of phone you have, the IPhone SE is not compatible on our network from At&T this phone is only compatible if it is Comcast/ Verizon branded.
Thank you for the replies. What I'm particularly concerned about is this: If I outright purchase an iphone x from xfinity, and unlock it, will it work completely fine/normally on the AT&T network if I decide Xfinity Mobile does not work well for me. I am interested in switching to Xfinity Mobile, but want to be sure I can come back to AT&T without issues if necessary.
I do not understand this answer at all. The Iphone SE comes in three models, the USA model A 1662 is for ATT-TMobile-Verizon. They do make a special model for Verizon and XM. The other model is for Sprint / Asia. You can not tell me that XM can not accept an unlocked phone that will work on ATT-TMobile -Verizon when all other carriers can/will/do. What kind of jv, minor league, hocus pocus, smoke & mirrors, slight of hand load of junk is XM trying to load onto it's customers. Too much of what your unknowable CS team is telling us is unbelievable B.S. To people that have been dealing with cell/smart phones for years know that this just plain wrong information. Please tell us what XM does to make an unlocked phone NOT work when it WILL work on all the others. There is GSM, there is CDMA and there is whatever Sprint uses, thats it. If you are telling me that Apple is making Iphones especially for XM's use only well then Comcast has even more clout then even I ever imagined
I will correct my post because I was speking as an SE owner. The I phone X has to be A1865 for Verizon/Sprint/China, they are correct the ATT model of Iphone X will not work. Sorry for the previous rant.

linmy, the iPhone X from ATT isn't compatible with our network so I would not think that it works the other way around.
I believe if you purchase an iPhone from Apple that is designed to work with Verizon, that phone will also work on GSM networks. I have an iPhone 6S that I purchased from Verizon, works on Xfinity Mobile, and will also work overseas in Europe with a SIM from a local provider. All European providers use GSM. I could also use my phone on AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S. if I so desired. Those two are GSM and my iPhone 6S will work with GSM or CDMA. That is the situation with my 6S and should also be the same for iPhone X.
I have managed to switch an iPhone that had always been on CDMA to GSM by simply swapping sims. Indeed this is exactly what Apple indicates is possible and countless iPhone users have had the same experience.
Xfinity Mobile branded iPhones are able to operate on GSM networks provided they are unlocked. The technical capabilities of each model of iPhone sold by Xfinity Mobile are clearly described on the Apple website and are not subject to dispute. [The situation is a little more complicated for certain GSM carrier-branded iPhones as they are not all capable of working on CDMA networks, e.g. the AT&T and TMobile iPhone 7 in native cellular mode because of the Intel modem they contain].
By the way, CDMA carriers do use sims although Verizon and Sprint use them in different ways (Sprint uses the sim just for LTE and the MEID of the device is "married" to the ICCID of the sim).
An unlocked Xfinity-branded iPhone is capable of working on a GSM carrier. That does not necessarily mean every GSM carrier will activate such a phone as each carrier sets its own policy on what devices are permitted on its network. What it does mean is the phone has the technical capability to work on a GSM network.
This thread has tons of misinformation. First of all XFinity phones use the same network as Verizon, which is CDMA. All Europe and Canada only use GSM network ( att and t mobile in the states). If ur phone is locked u can only use w the provider that you currently have. Once you unlock your phone you can switch to a different provider, BUT it has to be under the same network. So unlocked Verizon phone will work w xfinity. Unlocked Verizon/xfjnity phone will NEVER work w GSM provider. meaning you cannot switch from att to xfinity ever. GSM network uses sim cards. cDMa does not use SIM cards. I phone always have SIM card slot (even on Verizon/xfinity specific phones). However if u unlock CDMA phone and attempt to insert SIM card, it will give u error, and will not work as your phone is not build to work w GSM. You can take CDMA phone and use oversees ( roaming). You cannot take cdma phone and switch SIM card to work oversees w a local carrier (as all European carriers are on GSM network) your phone is not build for that. The only way to switch from cdma to gsm is take your I phone apart and re-wire it, and trust me you probably can’t pull it off
I know most iphone users dont seem to realize, but imessages, picture messages, facetime, and the majority of apple services use data. So while texting is indeed free on XM, that is green bubble texting, otherwise you're using data. (And yes, this still applies, even if you are on wifi.) So if this applies to you, you can change that feature in the settings by turning off mobile data all together. Not sure exactly how your bill breaks down, but not only do you have to pay for data usage. You have to pay for the device monthly, on top of the service cost, which is the same on every carrier so no disadvantage there. (you really could pay $0 for service if you paid off your devices and kept your data usage under that 100MB.)
I also recall that $200 switch credit which I got without a problem. I know they hammered it into my head not to allow my bill to get past due. They said when switching that if I did, it could prevent my credit from being applied. I'm guessing this is because they had dealt with the issues a fair amount, and this was right after the service was released.
I do by the gig every month, and pay nothing more than my phone payment typically. I did have 2 months in the past year that I used data, from when power went out. I'm a former Verizon and AT&T Store Manager, and I just cannot justify spending the extra money at any of the other carriers. I can get the the same service, for less. (And yes, this is even cheaper than employee lines often times.) Not to mention, customer support is pretty much the same everywhere, most of it is outsourced to third party companies anyway.
I hope maybe I was able to help a little.
Don't switch... This is a warning...I regret my switch every single month my bill processes... It's all smoke and mirrors... Please don't do it... I'm always on WiFi... My kids are and my husband is also all day at work and at home... We barely use our phones and never watch videos when we're not home.... Yet and still this is my bill almost every month... It's bs and highway robbery... Not only that... When I purchased my phone's I was promised $200 off each line if I switched... That was a year ago... Till this day I've only received $100 off... That's it that's all!!! No one will fix it... Everyone agrees I'm owed it but they won't fix it... When I'm done paying these phones off... I'm switching back... Never in my life would I think anyone was worse than Sprint... They have met their match.. I'm running to Sprint... They claim it's free text and free calls and create these ridiculous data charges every month.. I HATE XM PHONE SERVICE!!!!!!
