ROKU, HBO GO

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

Hmm....HBO® doesn't look bigger and better than ever on my X1's XFINITY On Demand. No Deadwood, no Boardwalk Empire, no Carnavale etc., which means they STILL don't get the point of we want this programming ON OUR TV SETS EITHER THROUGH ON DEMAND AND/OR ROKU. I do see that pig Bill Maher on there. If I wasn't getting HBO free, I'd cancel it.

Edit: I just brought up the first episode of Deadwood on-line and tried to use X1's Send to TV BETA function. No go. Send to TV control comes up behind the video. No way to bring it up front. Completely useless.

The person who said HBO is bigger and better on xfinity on-demand (I assume he/she is comcast employee) is typical of the total ignorance and thickness of their reps regards this topic.

When I called to complained about not having ROKU/HBOGO access due to comcast not allowiing it, the rep had no clue what i was talking about.  She said contact ROKU.  At least comcast can train their reps to be up on this subject.

The above link has good info on this subject - ALSO - it has how to contact Comcast about the issue since this forum is in outer space as far as getting any traction with Comcast.

Re: Roku Users Ask For Xfinity Channel

The link mentions both comcast and direct tv as not supporting the hbogo app...Direct tv now does support it, leaving only comcast as not getting in line with its customers on this.

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

As Comcast is the biggest...why would they want to be last (as always) every other major cable and sat company allows the ROKU 3 HBO-app...and there are several other Roku TV apps that will not work for Comcast customers. Why not resolve this and give us the same great features as TWC customers have (before the merger) this way no decision has to be made to remove ROKU HBO and ROKU-TWC TV apps from their customers (and legally / morally can't divide features between Xfinity and TWC customers). Please don't ignore this request like you have all the others on here.

When will Comcast be adding HBO Go for Roku

The competition in this area (Snohomish County, WA) offers HBO Go on Roku in addition to other platforms. Comcast appears to offer it on Apple TV. The list of supported carriers is quite long and Comcast's absence is a bit puzzeling. For those of us that travel it lets us get alot more out of our cable subscription. While it may seem like a small thing, it's more difficult to stomach when the local competition supports it.

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

Well, this isn't HBOGo, but...as I was looking through the TV Shows - History and Documentary section on my X1, I come across Deadwood. So I go to the HBO On Demand section and start looking at series and I find The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Carnavale and a whole bunch more. And, they were all FREE!!

I don't know if everything that's on HBOGo is there, I'll leave you to check for your favorites (and for other networks that should be on Roku but aren't).

While it still isn't HBOGo on Roku, it's a good start.

(That is if it all doesn't disappear tomorrow...it's happened before!)

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

I have heard. Comcast already allows AppleTV to play HBOGo, but not Roku. This new deal will give AppleTV faster access to all channels, not just HBOGo if Apply pays for it.

The HBOGo issue is separate.

When you try to run HBOGo on the Roku you have to authenticate on the HBOGo web site first. At this stage Roku has no interaction with Comcast. It's HBOGo that interacts with Comcast to authenicate and HBOGo can authenticate Comcast accounts, just not for the Roku devices. HBOGo can authenicate for Roku devices, just not Comcast accounts. There is zero technical reason HBOGo could not run on Roku for Comcast accounts except of a legal agreement that I am sure Comcast is blocking, deliberately.

So why AppleTV but not Roku?

My speculation is Comcast views Apple users differently than Roku users. Apple users will pay a premium for Apple products. They will stand in line for days to be the first to get a new Apple product. And, push come to shove, Apple users will choose Apple over Comcast. Denying Apple users HBOGo access would cost Comcast subscribers, but allowing AppleTV users HBOGo access would probably not hurt Comcast bottom line. Comcast views Roku users differently. We're cheap and might drop set top box rentals if we can get content without the box rental.

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

PJ,

The Apple TV basically follows the same authorization format at the Roku - the difference being that there is an XFinity option on the page...

As for Apple TV being 'premium' -- it's a $99 box -- pretty much the same price as the newer Roku boxes -- and yeah, I take your points as valid for new devices or other premium devices, but the current Apple TV is pretty simple and you can get them anywhere.  The only pain is tricking it to pull media from a DLNA type server -- and that's an apple thing (they want you in iTunes...).

The PS3 costs more than either Roku or Apple TV and the new HBO Go App is not supported by the fine folks at XFinity Smiley Sad

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

When I say premium, I mean Apple and all Apple products, not just AppleTV. Apple users pay a premium for most Apple Products. And most Apple users are extremely loyal to the brand, which is my point. If you have a iMac and iAir and iPhone you'll probably buy an AppleTV over a Roku and be really upset if Comcast blocked Apple, more so than Roku users.

I dunno Dude. Theres more Roku Users then there are APPLETV users I would wager. I just think they were holding out to have a deal with APPLE TV to try to boost sales of APPLE TV. And perhaps APPLE TV was willing to pay Comcast a hefty fee to have exclusive priority on Comcast networks.

Look what Netflix had to do to get better bandwidth with Comcast. Comcast is like the Mob Boss now. Don't get me wrong I am a capitalist but what Comcast is doing isnt Capitolist its Crony Capitolism. Big Difference.

If Comcast really had a superior service they wouldnt have to use the tactics they are using shutting out other competitors they would welcome the competition and strive to be better and offer more conveniant services.

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

Just got this response from Comcast regarding my PS3 inquiry a week or so ago:

**********

This is in response to your concern regarding HBO GO not being available
in PS3.

With regards to your concern, we apologize that HBO GO is not available
using your Playstation 3 console. Comcast is continually evaluating new
platforms to support for the Online TV Partners like HBOGO, but at this
time have no committed dates to support HBOGO on Roku or PS3. As of this
time HBO GO is already accessible using Xbox 360 and Kindle Fire, but we
still do not have a date on which HBO GO will be available using PS3. We
apologize for this inconvenience.

If you need further assistance, please chat with us via www.comcast.com.
We appreciate you taking the time to contact us.

Thank you for choosing Comcast.

Sincerely,

Well, at least he appologized... seriously annoying.  Why are Comcast the only major cable provider not supporting these other platforms!

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

Unless there is a mass exodus of Roku users from Comcast, Comcast will continue ignoring our pleas.. I can almost guarantee you that Apple and Microsoft have paid Comcast much like Netflix recently has to ensure delivery of additional features to their products. They will continue to play coy in the public spotlight because that is what they do, and the reps genuinely don't know what's going on with this as it's predominately a manager and C-level issue.

"Evaluating" is simply another way of saying "waiting for our money". Comcast is a terrible company, but we're forced to support them when it's either the only or only reasonable option in the area. I hope for TWC customers' sake that the merger falls apart.

I can't wait to get HBO Go on my Roku, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Roku isn't a big company like Apple or Microsoft, so while they may play ball they can't afford to play with the big boys. Samsung has no excuse in this matter.

Why are Comcast the only major cable provider not supporting these other platforms!

Because, although the competition is fierce, they are the greediest and least customer-focused of all the cable/internet companies.

Comcast is continually evaluating new platforms...

I once worked for a company whose platform they were "evaluating." They never finished, leaving us in limbo forever.

I truly hope someone at Comcast is reading the posts. Once a competitive (can't get Sat TV in my neighborhood due to high buildings and trees) provider, such as FIOS is available at my house, I plan to leave Comcast. The fact that Google Chromecast and Apple products have HBOGo and not Roku is a joke. This wouldn't even be an issue is VOD had the same amount of programs available.

Re: HBO GO on Roku

Simply put, because Comcast wants you to use their own On Demand platform to stream HBO GO on your big screen.

It's worth noting that HBO doesn't have the exact same agreement with all providers. Comcast may have skimped on their payments to HBO and cut corners by not authorizing the service on the more popular platforms.

Word of advice: Get a Chromecast. If it's available on your phone, it's available on the Chromecast. HBO GO supports Chromecast, so it should be a no brainer. Just get the $35 dongle.

Comcast's On Demand doesn't stream HBO GO.  It has some HBO content, but not all that is available on HBO GO.

ChromeCast would be a major PITA for me (and probably a lot of other people, too).  I only have two HDMI ports on my TV. One for the DVR, and one for my Roku.  I've had to backgrade to component video for my DVD.  I don't want to have to crawl behind my TV swapping HDMI's every time I want to watch HBO GO. (Can you imagine what a hassle that would be for those with wall mounts?)  I also don't want to have to either pull up an app on my phone, or go into another room to pull it up on my PC for every show/movie. I can do that now, if I set my laptop on the TV stand, and plug its' HDMI output into the TV.  I also don't really want to shell out another $35 for a far less elegant, and largely redundant device just to watch one channel. Come on, Comcast - if I can watch it on my phone, computer or tablet, why not my Roku?!?!?

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

I want to throw in my support for HBO Go, and the other channels that I already pay for to be made available on Roku. Comcast routinely dodges the question of why they choose to exclude Roku and other services, but I think the most likely answer is that they do not wish to risk hurting profits on their own equipment. If this is true, then please know that I like the flexibility and portability that Roku affords me, and I will NEVER purchase, lease, or rent a box from Comcast EVER; and you are further hurting your company's image (if that's even possible with as bad as it is already), as well as excluding the possibility of myself and others ever upgrading or adding onto our current service. Every other major provider has chosen to work with Roku rather than continue to oppose them. Please join them, thank you.

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

As the owner of both a Roku and a Playstation 3 and as an HBO subscriber, IT IS RIDICULOUS that Comcast is denying a service that its customers PAY THEM MONEY FOR. It is no wonder that Comcast is one of the lowest rated in customer satisfaction among cable companies. They are very smart for pulling off theese massive contracts that keep customers STUCK with their service. I literally have no choice but to continute to be a comcast customer and I hate every minute of it while this issue persists. If it wernt for this, I would actually be very pleased with what I have been getting so far. But this is just so outrageous that I feel we need to be heard. PITCHFORKS UP PEOPLE!

Re: ROKU, HBO GO

I must say I am surprised at how much content is now available On-Demand. It still pales in comparison to HBO Go, but it does again prove one major point. Comcast has no intention of ever supporting the Roku for any premium services. Why it chooses to support WatchESPN is beyond me. The same authentication protocol is in play. I hope the PS3 is not going to suffer the same fate. I am glad I finally made the switch to DISH.

Re: HBO NO Go?

If you really think Comcast doesn't know about the HBO Go Roku issue, you're wrong. They are intentionally blocking it -- have been since Roku acquired HBO Go access in 2011. They are the last major ISP to do so.

I am glad that Comcast has finally allowed FOX Now on Roku, but it isn't enough. There are still a lot of channels, including HBO Go, that Comcast is blocking. These include the History Channel, Lifetime, A&E, and more. I've dropped HBO Go because of this issue, so maybe I should just drop the rest of my pay TV service as well and save myself some more money.
