X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

It could be the fact that the X1 has HDCP built into it and the projector does not,
if a transmiting device (the cable box, in this case) has DHCP (which all of Comcast's HD boxes do, at least since
the Cisco takeover of Scientific Atlanta) and the recieving device does not (in this case, your projector).
I should inform that the only reason I feel that to be the case is because HDCP has only been around the
Past few years, and it wasn't integrated to DVI. It's an HDMI only protection, so you will not see it with component.
I should also mention that (if you have not found a solution at this time, seeing that it is an older post)
You might want to try component, cable TV broadcast is currently broadcast at 1080i, and at that resolution there is no (visible, or otherwise)
Difference between component and HDMI. In addition, component is more stable over longer runs, like what would be needed for a projector.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

I'm writing in with another update:

Right as I post this, my X1 box refuses to let me view channel 369 (Starz HD) even though I can get it on my old DVR that my son now uses nor can I change to channel 891 (IFC HD).

This has been going on for fifteen minutes and their are other channels that the box refuses to let me switch to. I turned the box off for a minute and when I turned it back on I could get both channels again, but after I switched away from them checking to see if all was well, once again the box refused to go back to those channels.

??????????

I'm going to give it until Friday if I can stand it and then I guess I'll return it to my local office and get another standard updated box (DCT-3501).

Twenty six years with Comcast and this is how they treat me.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

My x1 box is refusing to let me see FoxSports Detroit and the NFL Network. I have the sports package so that's not the problem because I can see both of them on the main box, but not on the satelite boxes.

The other problem is they were installed yesterday and the boxes cannot update from the "native" version so that means no recordings.

Beyond frustrated at this point.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

My X1 boxes are giving me a similar problem. I cannot get to NESN SD 51 or HD 851. I'd like to watch the Red Sox game... very frustrated.

Can't view many channels here in the NW Chicago suburbs... terrible.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Same issues in Chicago NW Suburbs, channels aren't working, Comcast customer service takes me to a busy signal(?).

Next time I get through to someone I am asking for an old box, this X1 is a piece of trash.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Well the box has really started to go crazy. After watching our first recording with box (Sleepy Hollow and it was pretty good) when I went back to live TV and tried to switch to channel 7 HD (807) to watch Iron Man 2 again, the box wouldn't let me nor could I get the the SD channel.

Crazy!!!!

Tomorrow morning I'm going to try the update function found under Settings-About that someone here recommended. I'm just afraid of what it might do but I guess I have no choice.

Crazy.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

This new x1 box is a bug ridden nightmare. Comcast has become complacent and unwilling to invest in their systems. When we lived in PA, we were forced to sign with Comcast as they were the only game in town. When Verizon FIOS came into our area, we were so fed up, we switched. Unfortunately, we were spoiled by FIOS amazing service, up to date hardware, intuitive and easy to use software and beta bugs that were fixed quickly. Moving to MD and having to deal with Comcast yet again is depressing. Their pricing is hardly competitive and they continue to offer far less for larger cost. The few years we had with FIOS were annoyance free. Now it looks like we're calling Dish. I'd suggest calling to see if FIOS is available in your area and if not... call Dish until it is. Comcast isn't going to invest more than the bare minimum until their competitors are breathing down their backs all over the U.S.

id love to speak with the President and CEO of Comcast. If he really cares about his customer and is willing to stand behind his product he'd return my message.

The X1 box is horrible. Should not have released it. I have posted about several issues and now tonight, I cannot change channels or access my dvr recordings, again. This is the most unreliable box they've ever put out on the market. The Motorola executives have got to be laughing at you. I will not recommend X1 platform to anyone. I've had plenty of customers ask me and I steer them away with a driven passion. If Comcast will not stand behind the customers whom are paying a high price for the performance, then the customers will not stand behind you. This could be what sinks Comcast.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

I have a question. A few weeks ago my family was having issues with one of our x1 boxes, which I believe was caused by a weak signal going to the box. A very nice technician came out, and balanced a device outside the house which bumped up our power levels nicely.

It seems that with the colder weather we've been having lately, I've noticed the downstream recieved power getting a bit high on my PR150BNM x1 box. Right now my levels are as follows:

Power (dBmV): 60.5

SNR (db): 35.7

Downstream recd power 15.0 dBmV

Downstream SNR 35.7 dB

Upstream Power 36.2 dBmV

I've heard you don't really want downstream power levels higher than 15, could this create any issues? My box was not the one that had weak signal issues, so this box probably gets the most power out of all the boxes in the house (connected directly to the drop amp, no splitter in between). I appreciate any insight.

Tonight first real bad experience with x1 dvr and remote. I could change channels only by actually using up/down channel selector. Could not view hd channels at all. Could not get local channel 3/803hd ABC, could not get local channel 4/804hd Fox networks. The sad part is I have 3 other tvs that could get all hd channels. Weird.

Re: X1 Problem and wish list Summary

I think I have tried every way there is to record:  1) the guide using the red record button, which rarely works, 2) selecting a show and using in info and 3) going to the DVR manager on Comcast.com--which I might try again if I could get someone to reset that option under my ID.  My last record request, from over a week ago, is still "loading" from every pc or ipad I use to sign off and on again.  No matter the way I try, sometimes if works, many times it doesn't.  Record options comes up less often.  I'm ready to give up on any expectations.  Plus, I'm not sure if every area is experiencing the ALWAYS long waits on the phone.  I am even in a group that is considered a "special customer" because there are over 4,000 homes where the complex has signed a 15 year contract with Comcast.  We have a special phone number.  Even that line always seems to always say that they are experiencing a higher volume of calls (surprise, huh?) and longer than ususal wait times.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Great thread!  I just got my X1 DVR and one terminal yesterday.  Install was a disaster, tech took 3.5 hours, went through two DVRs and two terminals.  Finally got both working, mostly.  The terminal seems solid, stays connected and works without issues.  The DVR is another story.  I saw some earlier posts about HDCP issues and I think that might partially explain my DVR issues but I was hoping someone might have some advice.  I have an older 720p Panasonic Plasma connected with both HDMI and Component to the X1 DVR.  If I have both plugged in when I connect power to the DVR I just get two dashes and the red Xfinity logo for maybe 30 seconds then a blank screen.  It doesn't matter if the TV is on Component or HDMI, it never gets further.  If I only have component connected when I connect power, the DVR gets all the way through boot and is on, but I have tons of small white dashes on the TV flashing all over.  If I let it go all the way until I get a clock on the DVR, then connect HDMI, then switch TV inputs to HDMI, I get a picture.  I can leave it on HDMI or back to component and it seems to work fine.  It must have rebooted last night because this afternoon I went to watch and it was stuck on two dashes and no signal.  I immediately thought it must be an HDCP issue, but why the flashing dashes on the screen with component?  Then why do I have to connect HDMI back just to get a normal signal?  On the plus side I have display set to 1080i and it seems to have stuck on reboot so I got that going for me.

I really do think it is a good box with interesting features.  I wish it responded faster (new hardware rollout with your new software and still laggy?  Really?), but the new features are mostly well thought out and pretty unique.

Yup.  Ch up and down sorta work, but direct ch change is like playing a slot machine...mostly losses.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Dave,

Do the following to view your signal levels:

Hold down the exit button on the remote for 5 seconds, and let go.

Press the down arrow twice

Press the "2" button on the keypad.

If you don't get it the first time, keep trying. The box is very picky with the timing, sometimes it takes me 5-6 tries to enter the menu.

The first menu you see on your primary x1 box is different than the first menu you see on one of the smaller x1 boxes, the numbers I posted are off of one of the smaller x1 boxes.

On the first menu that comes up, you will see some of the numbers I posted before, such as my updated values of:

Power (dBmV): 60.9

SNR (db): 35.2

To get to the other values, go down to "system", and then scroll right to page number 5 where you get additional info which is currently the following for me:

Downstream recd power 15.5 dBmV

Downstream SNR 35.3 dB

Upstream Power 36.2 dBmV

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Same issue with multiple channels here. One of our X1 DVR units got a firmware update today to 1.31.10 Build 4816 and is not having the issue. The other X1 DVRs that are on 1.30.08 Build 4722 are the only ones affected at this point. And none of the boxes on the 4722 firmware are able to update at all.

Comcast should give all X1 users a day credit for this problem since we can't get channels we are paying for and want to watch.

Well this is just great. I turned on the TV with the main X1 box and nothing but a blank screen.

Last night's 2 HOUR phone call with Comcast ended up being a whole lot of nothing with 3 people who didn't have a clue how to fix the problem and can't get a tech out here until Friday. Unacceptable!

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Okay, this morning all seems well, but I'm still getting short freezes and lags when I try to change channels. My X1 box is on firmware 1.30.08 Build 4722 and when I went to Settings-About and tried to update it, the message was that my box was running the most current update.

This I see from the posts here is apparently not true.

So, here on Wednesday I am two days away from chucking it all. I hope I get to see that newest firmware before I do.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Just got the X1 the other day.  What a mistake!  I love the concept, but has lots of issues!  The biggest one is why can't I select NHL Network or the FOX channel????  I reboot the device, then it works for a little bit. Then all of sudden, I can't doesnt let me change back to those channels.  The channel up/down buttons don't always work either.  Whats up????

BTW, I think I have the latest firmware update 8/14.

Hi.  Would not say it has many bugs.  Just this one thing right now.  It really is almost a deal-breaker for me to be stuck with stereo PCM sound when I try to watch a 5.1 audio recording on the sat box.

Worse is that the sat box is then stuck in stereo mode after the DVR recording is played.  So, I have to change the audio setting back to surround on the sat box.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

The firmware update is the XRE Server - not the STB firmware (you can't use the "Update Version" button for that one)

I just pulled the new XRE Server firmware by holding the button down on the front of my DVR for 10  seconds. Once it rebooted, I had the 4816 build.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Does the 4816 build resolve some of these issues?

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Well, I missed it this morning. My X1 box updated itself overnight to 1.31.10 Build 4816 which is a shame because already this morning I have been suffering the menu lag and momentary freeze ups. So, not all is well. I guess I'll just have to play around with it and see how much, if any, improvement this update provides.

BTW, the box reverted to 720p and I had to reset it to 1080p60. Also, strangely, when I try to reset the audio from stereo to sourround sound, the surround sound from my Kenwood home theatre amp goes away. When I reset the box back to stereo I get my surround sound from my amp back.

Finally, with regard to the so-called direct number to X1 Specialists listed here (877 896 8678), I have called it at least twenty five times since I had the box installed this past Friday and its been busy every single time.

......and the war continues.......

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Thanks for the info Mike!  What your describing sounds like the same stuff that's happening to me.  This is totally unacceptable!  Everytime I reboot the X1 the video setting reverts back to 720p.  I'm always having to change it back.  I also have everything going through my receiver, i havent noticed if the surround sound thing is happening.  My biggest complaint right now is that i cant select channels!  I've tried going to the guide...nothing.  I've tried pressing the channel by number...nothing.  This only happens to certain channels.  Of course, the ones that I watch most!!!!

Now that would be a great idea!  comcast needs to get it together.  The issues that were having are major problems.  Not just issues that would be "nice" if it worked.  We are talking about serious issues.  Can't get to a channell????  That's just POOR!!!!  Forget everything else and fix the most important issues!

X1 HDMI ouput not working

Hi,

I just got my installation done over this past weekend. Yesterday after coming home from work, I turned on the TV with the X1 box and had no picture. I asked my wife it had been working earlier and she said she had turned it off after it made "a weird noise."

I power-cycled the box, still no picture. I tried wiggling cables and noticed that I'd get blue flashes & such but no real picture. I thought maybe HDMI cable was bad, so I tried another and got the same thing. Then I thought maybe a problem with the TV's HDMI input - ran cable from my laptop into the TV and had an image, no problem. Finally, tried running component video & audio cables from X1 box to the TV, and voila I had picture and sound again. So it appears there is something wrong with the HDMI output of my X1 box.

Is this a known issue, and if so is there any means of fixing it aside from getting a replacement box?

I have not seen any postings about bad HDMI out of the box, on the X1 chats that I visit. Hopefully, yours is an isolated X1, and swapping will resolve it.

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Sorry to say, but everyday there are a dozen or more new posts for the same old issues.

Start at the earliest date and you will see that the X1 issues everybody is complaining about have been around for more than a year!

Every once in awhile someone from Comcast posts a "Thanks for the input message, we will forward your concern to our marketing and programming groups" which apparently are on long term leave.

A couple of the minor issues seem to have been cured lately like recording light stays on, etc. but even that is not true in all markets?

Overall it is a little better than what was, but still has a long way to go to be considered user friendly and anything close to the competition.

Contributor

Re: X1 – Settings, Remote & Equipment

Yeah, I forgot about that. On the old DCT-3501 box as with the older ones, a red recording light always told you when the DVR was recording. On my X1 sometimes its on and others it isn't, so I have had to be careful resetting the box when it freezes, having to actually go into the Saved section and verify if anything is recording.

It never ends.....
