TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Using our Xfinity X1 remote XR11, we are now only turning off our Samsung TV and Xfinity system by using the "TOP RIGHT POWER BUTTON" on the Xfinity remote; My husband is left handed, so he was using the top left button "TV" button, when turning off our Samsung TV/Xfinity system . Cross your fingers, as for the last 3 weeks of only using the power button, the TV has NOT turned back on.  This could be the solution for us!!! I'll keep you updated.

**I was just informed in a post on this forum that a newer Xfinity remote, the xr15, that only has 1 power button, would solve my issue. I recommend trying the xr15 remote, if your TV is randomly turning back on.

[ FYI, If you read my prior posts you'll see we tried many other solutions, including removing the batteries from the Xfinity remote... that seemed to work sometimes, but the TV started turning back on, even with the remote batteries removed.]

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

the xr15 seems to fix that issue as it has only one power button.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

I never realized that the right button turns both the tv and box off. Thanks!

I'm wondering what effect turning off the box has on anything, for example updates?

the set top boxes (x1) don't turn off with a button on the remote. the physical button on the set top box puts it in 'power saver' mode. if left off 24/7/365 (never using it) it saves around $1.00 - very energy efficient.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

A little confused. Here's a page that describes the various remote functions:

https://www.xfinity.com/tips/xfinity-x1-remote-tips-and-tricks#XR11

It shows that the top right power button turns the TV and X1 TV box on or off.

In settings, I have the power saving mode set to on which turns the box off automatically after a certain time that it's not in use.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

I'm having a similar issue with a home theater A/V receiver. It's a Sony STR-DA5700ES. I've had it connected to the same X1 box for about 3 years. Starting about two weeks ago, after I shut off the TV and HT receiver, about 5 to 10 minutes later the receiver turns back on. Then I shut it off again with the receiver's remote and it will turn on at seemingly random times. The only thing that has helped is turning off CEC, a.k.a. HDMI control, on all devices and using each component's remote to turn off the respective device.

However, this is NOT a "fix" it's a workaround, since turning off CEC disables the audio return channel and also requires hitting a minimum of three power buttons instead of one!

Comcast please fix this!

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

** 1/22/20** update 4/4/20
Our Solution... TV turning on by itself. After trying m as my different remedies... we discovered that when turning off our Xfinity/TV system using our current Xfinity XR11 remote we only use the "TOP RIGHT POWER BUTTON" on the Xfinity XR11 remote. My husband is left handed, so he was using the top left button "TV" button, when turning off our Samsung TV/Xfinity system. Over the last month of only using the top right power button, the TV has NOT turned back on.

**We found out that Comcast has a remote XR15 that should solve the problem, as it only has 1 power button on the top right. I will keep you updated once we receive the XR15 remotes and use them.

** Update, 4/4/20 We hated the XR15 remote, as the signal was weak, and overall quality of remote was poor compared to the XR11. Good new... Our TV has not turned in again by itself, as we only use the XR11, top right power button.

Thuis just happened to us last night (this am).  at 1:30, all was quiet.  At 4:15, the TV was on.  TV is a 2 year old Vizio 60" smart TV.  Service is X1.  Box is about 3 years old.

go to your TV settings and turn off CEC. you might want to first turn off the powersaver function on the X1 set top box to see if that cures the problem.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

This is definitely a Comcast X1 box problem. I have 2 almost identical home theaters in my home, one with a 4K X1 box and one with a regular Comcast box. Both cable boxes are connected, via HDMI cables, to Denon receivers. I use Logitech remotes to control both systems.  The Denon receiver with the X1 box connected to it turns on at least once a week at between 2 and 3 am. This has never happened to the other system. The Denon receivers must stay in standby mode in order to save the Surround sound settings.

Comcast please force your vendor to come up with a fix for this problem and get it out to us soon or quickly find a new vendor for your 4K boxes. I'm getting tired of getting up in the middle of the night to turn the system off.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

I was just reading through these message boards to see if there is a solution.  I honestly think it is the X1 cable box causing the problem.  We should not have to disconnect HDMI-CEC or CEC-ARC.

I noticed my TV was turning on by itself about 1 month ago and now that I am working from home I am noticing it does this about 1-2x per week now.  It even turned on by itself while I was on a Zoom conference call.  It also turns out at night about 1-2x per week.  Can someone at xfinity explain why the cable box is turning on?  It is at that point when it turns on that everything connected to it turns on... the TV and sound system.  I recently just turn off the TV by putting it to a different input source other than the xfinity cable box when I turn it off.  But again this is something that we should not have to do each time.  HELP!

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Mine stopped doing it when I removed the Alexa app from the TV, but maybe it is somehow being triggered by the activity when the X1 box does its nightly update.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Had the same problem last night.  Installed a UL listed power strip controlled by a wireless remote so we can turn the power off to ONLY the TV when not in use.    Without power, the TV better not automatically come on or we will have an even more serious problem!

Oh man. No power, TV on? A poltergeist situation. A serious problem, indeed.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

This happened to me twice this week in a brand new Sony smart tv;, both times were within the Xfinity box 2 hour restart window. Of course it didn’t happen at all within the first 2 weeks, and I am now outside of the Best Buy return window.

The HDMI CEC automatic turn on function for the tv was already off. Any other ideas or solutions that worked for people? Thank you.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

In the Sony 'network setup' section there is an option for 'remote start' to let casting from phones, etc. turn the TV on over the network.  Turn that off if you don't use it.  Also if you have installed the Alexa app and don't use it for voice control, uninstall it.

And make sure your firmware is up to date.  (Settings>About>System software update).

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Thanks for the quick reply.

I had checked that setting (Remote Start) to verify it was off. I also ensured that no timers were set.

I had installed the Alexa app, but have never used it. I will remove it to be safe.

Funny thing is the tv came on at 5am exactly today, and the restart window for the X1 cable box Is 4am-6am, so I am suspecting some correlation. The only other time this happened (so far) was also within that 4am to 6am window.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

I've had a Sony for a couple of years and I think it came on a couple of times by itself before I turned off the network setting.   Then I installed the Alexa app and it did it several more times before I removed it.  I do have HDMI CEC on because I use it to control the volume on my receiver which does not have good line of sight to the remote control - but that doesn't seem to affect power-on.

Re: TV turns on randomly on its’ own

Possibilities to consider for eliminating this HDMI poltergeist:

1 - Swap out the X1 and install HD-DTA in its place.

2 - Plug X1's output HDMI into an HDMI-switch/HDMI-capable-Receiver/HDMI-adapter that provides Analog Component Video+Audio out puts.   Feed the TV input with those component+audio outputs.    (If TV has component inputs 😐 )

3 - Disconnect HDMI from X1 to the TV - connect via Coax cable instead and watch everything in 4:3/SD/480i/fuzzy during daytime and then sleep soundly through the night without the HDMI poltergeist waking you.   (Some viewers do not care about HD at all.)

4 - Review the movie "Poltergeist" from 1982.
